Half of the population of the European Union has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to an AFP tally Tuesday, putting it ahead of the United States in the inoculation drive.

Nearly 224 million people across the 27 member states have been covered, with Spain leading the pack of larger countries with 58.3 percent of its population vaccinated, followed by Italy (54.4 percent), France (52.9) and Germany (52.2).

The figures mean Europe has now nosed ahead of the US in the vaccine drive. — AFP

Authorities in Wuhan say they would test its entire population for COVID-19 after the central Chinese city where the coronavirus emerged reported its first local infections in more than a year.

China is battling its largest coronavirus outbreak in months, confining the residents of entire cities to their homes, cutting transport links and rolling out mass testing as the fast-spreading Delta variant challenges its zero-Covid strategy and homegrown vaccines.

Beijing had previously boasted of its success in crushing the virus, allowing the economy to rebound and normal life to return while swathes of the globe have struggled with the pandemic that has killed more than four million people worldwide. — AFP

Valenzuela City has started giving out quarantine passes in preparation of the National Capital Region's return to Enhanced Community Quarantine on August 6.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government is requiring quarantine passes to make sure that only those authorized to go out leave home.

"Only one quarantine pass will be issued to the head of the family, which is also for free and will be delivered door-to-door by barangay staff," the city's Public Information Office says.

"The quarantine pass can only be used by one person and should not be used outside of the curfew hours of 8 p.m. to 4 a.m."

The United Nationalist Alliance, an opposition coalition during the Aquino administration, is suspending "all matters concerning alliances, coalitions, and other political activities" in light of uncertainty brought by the COVID-19 Delta variant.

"Amid the atmosphere of 'Elections 2022', UNA finds it cold and insensitive to put on the table any electoral agenda while our people are experiencing uncertainties in the wake of the growing Delta variant cases in the country," the party says.

"Politics is aggravating a public health issue," it says, adding party members will instead focus on helping address the pandemic.
