City officials say at least 17 people who came down with COVID-19 after a Christmas party gathering over 100 guests in Oslo last week are suspected of having the Omicron variant.

"So far 60 people have tested positive (for Covid) with PCR tests, and four with antigen tests. Seventeen are probably Omicron, but that has yet to be confirmed. So far, one case is confirmed to be Omicron after sequencing," the city of Oslo says in a statement.

Between 100 and 120 people -- all of whom were vaccinated, and one of whom had recently travelled to southern Africa -- had gathered last Friday for a Christmas party organised by their employer. — AFP

Authorities say police forces and customs intelligence personnel intercepted a watercraft and seized Thursday night some P7.5 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in the west coast off Zamboanga City.

Col. Rexmel Reyes, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, says joint personnel of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company and the Bureau of Customs intelligence and enforcement team were on seaborne patrol when they intercepted a Jungkong watercraft about 10 p.m. in the coastal water of Barangay Sinunuc.

Reyes says the Jungkong watercraft with markings “MJ/DS Cruiser” with two crew members was loaded with 214 master cases and 20 reams of smuggled cigarette brands with an estimated market value of P7,504,000.00. — The STAR/Roel Pareño

Spectators attending a major venue for the Beijing Olympics must be vaccinated but fans could be barred from the arena entirely if the coronavirus worsens in China, state media says.

Unlike the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics, which took place last summer in mostly empty stadiums, organisers of February's Winter Games have vowed to allow spectators, although only people living in China.

There has been no official announcement about how full venues will be so the rules at the 18,000-capacity National Indoor Stadium -- which will host ice hockey -- hint at what could lie ahead for the Games. — AFP

Asian markets are mixed Friday as traders tracked developments in the Omicron virus strain as it spreads around the world, fuelling concerns about the economic recovery, just as the Federal Reserve sets the stage to withdraw its vast pandemic-era financial support.

Hong Kong is among the main losers with several dual-listed tech giants taking a hit after US officials adopted a rule allowing them to remove foreign firms from Wall Street unless they provided certain information to auditors, a move primarily targeting Chinese entities.

Global markets have whipsawed since the Omicron variant hit headlines last Friday over concerns that it may be even more transmissible than the Delta strain and that vaccines may be less effective against it. — AFP

NASA on Thursday awards three companies hundreds of millions of dollars to develop commercial space stations it hopes will eventually replace the International Space Station, which is due to retire around the end of the decade.

"We are partnering with US companies to develop the space destinations where people can visit, live, and work, enabling NASA to continue forging a path in space for the benefit of humanity while fostering commercial activity in space," says NASA chief Bill Nelson in a statement.

"These awards will help ensure the United States has a continuous human presence" in low Earth orbit, says Phil McAlister, NASA's director of commercial spaceflight. "A gap would be bad." — AFP

The US House of Representatives votes Thursday to keep federal agencies running for another 11 weeks and avoid a costly holiday-season government shutdown, although the stop-gap measure faces a thorny path in the Senate.
