Chic Lola style
It’s no secret I’m obsessed with Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon. Does the name ring a bell? Lourdes or Lola, as her mother calls her, is only Madonna’s first- born.
When your mom is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, certain expectations need to be met. Questions like, is she going to go the same route as her mother? Will she be as cool as her mom, or will she turn out like Chastity “Chaz” Bono?
One can only imagine the kind of mother Madonna is. Rumors about not allowing her kids to watch television or making her kids eat macrobiotic food sound ridiculous, even worrisome, because us Madonna fans feel responsible for how the children are raised.
And why not? Madonna is our mother after all. And as Lola grew up before our eyes, doubts about her coolness and upbringing just faded away.
At 13, Lola has become the cool girl of her generation. Paparazzi shots of her outfits around New York or London reveal a flair beyond her years.
Her style is a mixture of ‘ 80s badass, reminiscent of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, to early ‘90s Seattle trailer trash and Savile Row tomboy chic.
More recently, Lola has taken on some blogging duties at the Material Girl website. Through her entries, it is obvious she has inherited her mother’s sassiness and confidence.
Her language brims with energetic teenster lingo peppered with “redunkulous,” “oh my diaz,” “ZOMG,” and “PFH (pretty freakin’ hot)”—as she writes about her favorite music, clothes, shoes, and shopping haunts, while citing seminal movies like Pretty in Pink, Dirty Dancing and the whole ‘80s era as her style inspirations.
It makes you wonder what Madonna thinks about her daughter’s ‘80s obsession. Could it be a mixture of embarrassment and amusement—the same feeling I get when teens nowadays tell me they love ‘90s grunge and all the “classic” bands of the time?
Lola also gives us a glimpse of Madonna as a mom. Apparently, Madonna has forbidden Lola to dye her hair until her 14th birthday.
But what makes Lola’s blog the ultimate purveyor of cool is how honest she is. She tells you not to hate any of her favorite bands like My Chemical Romance and how she loathes gladiator sandals.
Her youthful exuberance reminds us of how it is to be 13 again and what a great time it was.
As much as Lola sometimes makes me feel ancient, I am happy to note that she and I share the same passion for Florence and the Machine, Dr. Marten’s combat boots, denim short-shorts and the Spanish National Football team.
See? At 31, you can be as embarrassingly cool as a 13-year-old.
