Monterey gives back to host communities

-

MANILA, Philippines - Mention the word “Monterey” and shelves of high-grade, branded fresh meat come to mind. But for barangay residents in Langkaran, where Monterey’s Cavite Meatplant is located, Monterey means so much some than fresh meat.

Observing the high incidence of malnutrition in its host barangay, Monterey partnered with San Miguel Foundation and Langkaan 1 Elementary School to launch the Malusog na Katawan, Matalas na Isipan Supplemental Feeding Project. The feeding program is a school-based activity that targets poorly nourished children ages four to eight, especially those in day-care centers and public schools adjacent to the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) plant facilities.

The children are first weighed and dewormed, then fed everyday for six months with hot, nutritious meals until they reach their desired weight. The involvement of the parents is a key to the program’s long-term success so they were organized into teams and assigned tasks like marketing, cooking, and feeding. From August 2007 to January 2008, about 50 pupils benefited from the project and graduated from malnutrition.

Monterey Cavite Meatplant also initiated medical and dental missions in depressed areas in barangay Langkaan 1, which were warmly received by the people. Due to a growing number of business opportunities in the area, migration has resulted in a radical rise in the number of poor families there, making it difficult for the barangay to meet the basic needs of its constituents. Scheduled to coincide with the meat plant’s anniversaries in August 2007 and 2008, the missions serviced a total of 650 indigents.

In the past years, Monterey’s Cavite Meat Plant also spearheaded tree-planting projects, blood-letting programs and gift-giving activities with the families in Langkaan as main beneficiaries.

Today, Monterey continues to bring its brand of service to Filipinos in host communities through social development initiatives and also across the archipelago by opening more Monterey Neighborhood Meatshops that offer fresh, safe, high quality meats.

As it produces and brings superior meat products almost to the consumer’s doorstep, Monterey Cavite Meat Plant exercises social responsibility in its surrounding communities, bringing to fruition the ideals behind the company’s farm-to-market system.
