Fad Of The Week: News Channels Everywhere
After upping the primetime race a notch higher by means of Noli de Castro and adrenaline-deprived Shalani Soledad, the three largest networks in the country are at it again — this time with news channels. This week, GMA will be launching GMA News TV, reformatting QTV 11 as the country’s first free news channel in VHF. AksyonTV 41, TV5’s 24-hour free news channel in UHF, meanwhile, started its broadcast a week earlier than GMA. ABS-CBN maintains ANC, its cable news channel which started in 1996. Competition is expected to be tighter with the networks going all-out, though it is still unclear if ANC’s launching on free TV soon. Whichever way it is, at least now there’s no excuse for Filipinos to be left out in the news.

Developing Story Of The Year: The Arab Revolt
In related news, after seeing Tunisia and Egypt be liberated from their despotic rulers, more nations followed suit in what is dubbed as “The Arab Revolution of 2011.” Taking a cue from our own EDSA 1986, Tunisia and Egypt were able to force their heads of state to step down from power and go in exile, though a few “martyrs” sacrificed their lives along the way. Social networking sites Twitter and Facebook also played a vital role in the success of the revolutions, with the youth leading the demonstrations. The whole world is watching as these stories develop, and in the end we find out whether one man can triumph over the will of his people.
Event Of The Week: The Edsa Revolution’s 25th Anniversary
It’s been a quarter of a century since it all happened, yet the spirit of EDSA is still very much alive. This week, the country celebrated the silver anniversary of the peaceful 1986 revolution, which ended the Marcos dictatorship and catapulted the Aquinos to national reverence. P-Noy has tasked the EDSA People Power Commission to spearhead the events organized in remembrance of 1986, and the commission did its assignment. EDSA was a flurry and a fiesta the whole day of the 25th, with events like boodle lunches, unveilings and tank exhibits set up in the country’s busiest thoroughfare. Also, as expected, traffic was horrible.
