Fitness any which way

WORLD PIECE - Donna Cuna-Pita -

Let’s face it, working out is just that — work. Otherwise, it would have been called a laze-out, a veg-out, or a space-out. But since we’re all so busy working, studying, and umm, thinking, who has time to work out? Well now, we all have the time because Kale Alvarez Sports & Fitness Training is here, and boy do they make it hard to come up with an excuse! Its founder, Kale Alvarez, a physical education grad from UP and a former multi-awarded Philippine football team star who also played in 2006 for Australia’s Brisbane Olympic football team, believes that in fitness you shouldn’t just work hard — you work smart.

Walk the talk

“When I went to Australia in 2006 to play for Brisbane Olympic football team, I made a couple of observations that turned my life around: First, a lot of people I met who held 8-to-5 desk jobs were at an OK level of fitness because they found time to play sports or go to fitness centers. Second and more important to me, I noticed that my Australian team would train less frequently than my Philippine team. Since I got into football at the age of six, I started to train daily. When I got into the National Team, we would train in the field twice a day during training camps, play two games a week and have no strength and conditioning training. In Brisbane, we would train in the field twice a week, play one game a week and do strength and conditioning training once to twice a week. But the players were stronger, faster and injury-free.” This observation made Kale rethink how the local fitness and sports industry could benefit from the latest trends in sports science. When he got back to the Philippines, Kale gathered some of the country’s experts on different fitness and sports fields: Lovela Sabio, dance specialist, is the captain of the national street dance team, Kelvin Celis, the martial arts and self-defense specialist, is a SEA Games gold-medalist, and Ed Mallari, the fitness specialist, is head of GNC’s Sports Lab Program.

Come one, come all!

“Aside from organizing and managing sports events, we also hold clinics. Our sports events and clinics include basketball, futsal, volleyball, badminton, marathons, bike races, adventure races, arnis, capoeira, taekwondo, hip hop/street dance, jazz/contemporary dance and self-defense. We also make programs for strength and conditioning, build-up, yoga, pilates, aerodance/aerokickbox and others. Our events and programs cater to all ages and various fitness levels,” adds Kale. For personal training, the client has the option to choose between a one-on-one or a group approach with up to four members. The rate is P4,000 for one-on-one, and P2,500 each person for a group of four. This is comprised of eight sessions two times a week. At your preferred time and schedule, Kale or one of his co-trainers will customize a fitness regimen and go to your place and bring the exercise equipment. For corporate training, they usually make a special package according to the needs of the company. The team is affiliated with GNC Sports Lab allowing them to give freebies and discounts on GNC products for corporate clients. Other group clinics are usually held in schools and sports facilities with fees ranging from P3,000 to P3,500 per module. So whether you’re a workout groupie or a lone fighter, they have something to pique your interest and fitness level. “We strive to encourage better performance in the day-to-day work, school, home, and leisure activities of the average Filipino,” ends Kale. Far from just making fitness accessible, customized and affordable, Kale Alvarez Sports & Fitness Training aims to change the Philippines, one or four flabby bellies at a time.
