The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Paul Smith Black Label spring/summer 13 takes inspiration from the work of leading artist Gerhard Richter and contemporary photographer Sandra Kantanen.

The print and colour palette of the collection reflect Richter’s painting techniques, whilst Kantanen influenced the graphic prints and darker mood of the collection.

The dry brushing and smudging effects of Richter’s early oil paintings have been adapted into key prints for spring/summer 13: a bold pansy print with blurred filter effect, sun bleached checks and kaleidoscopic leaf and flower motifs. This brush-like blur is created using an innovative technique where patterns are digitally printed onto the threads.

The collection has a soft silhouette, with easyfit shapes and fluid tailoring creating clean lines. Longer lengths and oversized proportions are key; silhouettes are slim to the hip but full through the hem with softly tailored trousers, sunray pleated skirts and maxi dresses. Soft, weightless fabrics contribute to the relaxed, feminine mood of the collection with fluid, printed silk T-shirts and easy-fit shirts. Garments are cut to include an interesting mix of contrasting cloths, different textures and a mix of colours. The colour palette contrasts soft pastels and neutral nudes with graphic greys and deep blues, punctuated by warm yellow, raspberry red and vivid lime.

Paul by Paul Smith

Paul by Paul Smith spring/summer 13 takes inspiration from the abstract photography of Turner Prize-winning contemporary artist Wolfgang Tillmans and illustrator Hisham Akira Bharoocha’s surrealist collages.

Tillmans’ minimalist images experiment with colour, form, material and space, themes that are reflected in the use of print and colour in the collection.Tillmans’ use of shade blocking inspires keyprints for spring/summer 13: a large colour block stripe blended with an airbrush effect is repeated to dramatic effect. The distorted photographs of Hisham Akira Bharoocha inspire the collection’s botanical prints, which combine digitally enhanced flowers with delicate hand drawings, contrasting pattern and texture.

The dreamlike feel of the collection is reminiscent of lazy, hazy summer days. Casual basics are made from fluid jersey, and soft separates such as the bright botanical print pieces are made from weightless silk cotton and soft chambray. Tailored pieces are made from heavier cotton canvas. Chambray is paired with delicate Broderie detailing on simple camisoles, collarless shirts and sleeveless shift dresses, as well as forming a versatile base for classic polka dot and mini anchor prints on chinos, workwear jackets and tiered summer dresses.

Other key pieces in the collection include the leather contrast sleeve varsity jacket in classic black, and stone and contemporary red and navy, and the unlined collarless biker jacket in tourmaline and black. Layering forms a key part of the collection, with signature items in classic styles layered together.

The colour palette contrasts soft summer neutrals and feminine pastels with rich mahogany, indigo and green, punctuated by a mix of brights, from crimson to primrose yellow.
