Shell holds essay writing contest

-

MANILA, Philippines - In celebration of the National Energy Consciousness Month last December 2010, Shell companies in the Philippines supported various events of the Department of Energy (DOE) that aim to develop an energy-conscious and energy-efficient citizenry, all working towards a sustainable energy future.

DOE Secretary Jose Rene Almendras, during the opening program, expressed his deep concern on the availability of energy for future generations. He explained, “We are faced with such a huge problem — scarcity of resources, which is why I worry about our future generations. We need to guarantee the young people that there is fuel for them in the future. As members of the energy family, let us use our roles to contribute to the solution of the problem and find satisfaction in the fact that in our simple ways, we are making the lives of the younger generation better.”

With the theme “Energy Access for More: How Can the Youth Be Involved in Solving the Country’s Energy Challenge?” students were invited to participate in the 2nd Essay Writing Contest for College Students, a program of Shell in partnership with the DOE, Energy Regulatory Commission and Energy Council of the Philippines. The objective of the contest is to make each Filipino an energy-concerned citizen, starting with the youth, who are the most critical stakeholders in building a New Energy Future.

“We wish to gather even more participation for the second year run of the essay writing contest as there is much the youth can learn from this activity, and there is also much we can learn from them,” said Shell companies in the Philippines country chairman Edgar Chua. Some 15 colleges and universities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao participated in the inaugural run of the contest, expressing their enlightened views on enhancement measures for competitive electricity markets, best energy market solutions, clean energy solutions and green workplaces.
