Tesoros maintains its brand image as the store for the best local artisanal products, as it hosted talks on “Philippine Indigenous Textiles” for the ASEAN Ladies Foundation with their chairperson Pamela Louise Manalo and Tesoros chairperson Alice Tesoro-Guerrero.

There were two speakers, who are recognized champions of Philippine indigenous fabrics and fashion.  Philippine textile expert and UP Diliman Art Studies professor Dr. Norma A. Respicio gave an overview on the origins of the multitude of Philippine textiles by region, how these are recognized by their design, colors and raw materials utilized, how they are woven and the meaning of the designs, which, far from being merely decorative, contain symbols of how our ethno-linguistic groups understood the natural world surrounding them, what was meaningful and valuable to them.

This heightened understanding makes us treasure our local textiles more and inclines us to patronize them so our weaving communities will be sustained and enable them to continue making our heritage craft forms.

Then Patis Pamintuan-Tesoro, the leading female designer-proponent of Filipiniana and noted heritage conservationist, elaborated on her original, iconoclastic fashion interpretations, how she mixes textiles with embroidery, beading, hand-painting and dyeing techniques, coming up with groundbreaking combinations that she presented in a mini-fashion show. Patis never fails to surprise and her latest collection was proof that her ideation remains in top form, inspiring us all to wear Filipiniana for always.

Members from the nations of the ASEAN Ladies related so well to the talks, themselves coming from cultures rich in native textiles.

A fine collection of Philippine textiles and embroideries and Patis’s showroom are at Tesoros Makati on 1016 Arnaiz Ave. Buy Filipino and champion Filipino identity.
