Derek on Cristine: ‘I’m gonna be her friend for life’

Chuck Smith - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - “Shortest longest relationship is how I put it.”

This is how Derek Ramsay described her relationship with Cristine Reyes when he spoke to movie scribes during the press conference of his upcoming drama series “For Love or Money” on Monday, October 7.

It was reported early last week that Derek and Cristine already ended their relationship, just a month after they became a couple.

But according to the Kapatid actor, the fact that they broke up after a month does not mean what he and Cristine had was a “lesser relationship.”

“Shortest, (because) it’s a month. Longest, because I have a friend for life. And I’m gonna be her friend for life,” Derek said.

The “For Love or Money” actor added he does not “compare relationships.”

Derek remains mum on the reason for the breakup with Cristine, saying “It’s just a decision that was made.”

“Ito lang ang sasabihin ko: walang may kasalanan, walang may mali, walang masama,” he explained.

Although the two have broken up, Derek and Cristine still have to work together as they finish shooting for Viva Films’ “Trophy Wife,” which is slated for a November release. The two are also leaving for shows in Hawaii this week. But the 36-year-old actor said he’s not uncomfortable to see and work with Cristine.

Derek said he’s been friends with Cristine for three years. The two worked together in the 2011 movie “No Other Woman.” They were rumored to have dated early 2013, right after Cristine admitted her split with Rayver Cruz.

Right after they admitted their relationship, Derek and Cristine constantly declared their love for each other on social media. In one of his Instagram posts, Derek posted a photo of him and Cristine kissing with the caption, “This is forever.”

Derek refused to comment when asked about the said Instagram post.

“Like I said, this is a private situation that me and AA are going to handle together or individually. And after time, I’m sure everything’s going to be okay,” he said.

Amid the breakup, however, the Kapatid star remains busy as ever. Derek will star in “For Love or Money,” his third series with TV5 following the superhero show “Kidlat” and the action show “Undercover.”

In “For Love or Money,” Derek plays a man torn between love for his wife (played by Ritz Azul) and an indecent proposal from a wealthy woman (played by Alice Dixson).

Derek admits the show’s premise seems similar to “Indecent Proposal,” the 1993 film starring Demi Moore. But the difference between the values of Filipinos and Americans—and how it would play out on the show—made him accept the role in “For Love or Money.”

“Alam n’yo naman tayo sa Pilipinas—how we value family, how we value marriage. It’s totally different how it is in the western world, where they’re totally liberated,” he explained. “Both love and money are necessities in life. It’s just a matter of how we view things.”

“For Love or Money” will premiere October 17, Thursday on TV5.
