Boom Sason plays it cool with her first collection

KISS ASS - Ana G. Kalaw -

Every course that Boom Sason studied, every school enrolled in, every international diploma earned has finally found fruition with the launch of the new designer’s first (ever) collection. Most designers would be confident with a certificate course in Fashion Design at Istituto Marangoni, but Boom, a stickler for knowledge learned both in and out of the classroom, saw fit to take formal design training at Milan’s Istituto di Moda Burgo, graduating with a dual diploma in women’s wear and beach wear. Not content, she also spent a few weeks in London, completing multiple certificate courses in fashion design and marketing and public relations and fashion label at Central Saint Martins. Prior to Milan, Boom also took design and arts courses at the First Media Design School in Singapore and in Stockholm University in Sweden.

So it’s no real surprise that Boom Sason’s first collection, finally launched after a year’s worth of work and so many years of design principle bombardment, is heavily influenced by European fashion. Edgy ready-to-wear reminds us of effortlessly elegant Parisian women while a minimalist inclination looks to Stockholm’s cool urban vibe. “I have worked hard to develop an edgy and polished line that makes a woman feel both sexy and sophisticated,” says the designer. “They have a certain clean and sexy look that never goes out of style.” And so she gives us tailored white tees that are stiff in the shoulders and slouchy everywhere else, jackets that portend a future of androgynous silhouettes and shadowed cleavage, and liquid skinny pants so desirable that women will forsake every sinful dessert just to fit in them.

Wearability is the strongest mark of any successful designer and Boom, for her first collection, has created pieces that any woman can easily see herself in; plus points for the fact that five or 10 years from now, these separates will still look sartorially appropriate. Her use of mostly black and white is intentional, a clean, stark palette that signifies the designer’s mix and match sensibilities. (The lone printed piece is a voluminous chiffon caftan that, paired with a tank dress, provokes ideas of luxurious beach escapes.) But her use of black leatherette is probably Boom’s biggest statement — and where she successfully trumps convention. By playfully combining the rock-and-roll fabric with satin, Boom also creates sexy cocktail wear that defies traditional beaded, bejeweled, color-riddled requirements — perfect for that woman who knows how to play it cool.
