Watch PETA’s ‘FnL’
MANILA, Philippines - If you’re looking for something with a local flavor, we recommend PETA’s FnL. FnL is a Filipino play that uses Bekinese and jologs. It’s the story of a Fil-Am rapper and a call center agent who can shift from one American accent to another, who wake up to learn that they’re fluent in old Filipino words. FnL looks to be a comedy of errors, made hilarious by the beki and jologs languages (in which we’re all fluent). The show aims to prove that all languages are created equal, and none is superior over the other. Keri? FnL stars Eko Baquial, Deli del Rosario, Meann Espinosa, Divine Aucina, Pepe Herrera, Gio Gahol, Norbs Portales, Kiki Baento, Kitsi Pagaspas, Roi Calilong, Yeyin Dela Cruz, and Michelle Ngu. The show is directed by Ian Segarra. FnL will be staged at PETA until Sept. 28.
Splurge at the Manila International Book Fair
We encourage everyone to go to the Anvil booth, which will host thousands of local books at a fraction of the cost (you can buy a book for P20, we swear). It’s the perfect time to explore Philippine literature, because publishers and authors are timing new releases for the book fair. Newly-minted and established authors will be there to meet fans and sign copies of their books. Of course, the Manila International Book Fair is also home to other bookstores and distributors, so you can buy that book you’ve been eyeing for months for a low price. The usual suspects are there: National Book Store, Fully Booked, Powerbooks, so make sure to explore. The fair takes place at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia until tomorrow.
Sketch at Art Mart BGC
If you’re tired of the usual tiangges and “bazaars” happening around the metro, why not check out Art Mart at BGC? It’s also a bazaar, but they exclusively sell art. Art Mart is modeled after artist markets in Europe and the US, where they provide free spaces for artists to show and sell their artworks, drawings, illustrations, and sculptures. Compared to bigger art fairs and gallery shows, the pieces sold here are more affordable. We recommend checking out Urban Sketchers Philippines, the local arm of the global community of Urban Sketchers. For their booth, they’re inviting everyone to a “sketching session,” where they go around BGC to draw on location (meaning no still-lifes). Every hour, they will have a show and tell session with the rest of the group. If you don’t feel like sketching, you may just drop by their booth and buy their works! Their art is very similar to the street artists you see in Europe. BGC Art Mart happens at the Bonifacio High Street today.
See ‘Shrek: The Musical’
It’s a Broadway musical based on the hit Dreamworks franchise and its appeal is nostalgia, especially for those who grew up watching the first Shrek movie and its sequels. Expect the same screwball kind of comedy seen in the films, as the ogre couple discovers true love and the importance of inner beauty, set to new LSS-worthy songs. We wonder how Shrek and Princess Fiona would look like in real life? Shrek: The Musical is being staged at the Meralco Theater until Oct. 20. For tickets, call Ticketworld at 891-1111.
