COMPILED - Cai Subijano - The Philippine Star

Fake funny face

MANILA, Philippines - In the world of fashion, there is but one universally hated f-word: fake. Never, ever make the tacky mistake of buying into counterfeit goods, lest you be mistaken for being as false as the Class A fake hanging on the crook of your arm. But fake #NYFW tweeting from The Office’s Mindy Kaling? Mock pretension has never been so good, especially on our side of the world where most of us can barely relate to The Man Repeller’s fuss over pre-NYFW prep. From fake telling Joseph Gordon-Levitt about her fake “bespoke” bra to fake missing Alexander Wang because of too much fake sexy time with fake Adrien Brody at Trump Soho, Mindy is one fake front row fixture we wouldn’t mind spotting on the wires.

Year one

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a year since Tavi Gevinson launched Rookie, our favorite website for teen girls (and up). Last Wednesday, Tavi took to the site to thank her rookies for making the site’s first year a success: “I can’t believe it! So much love has gone into this collection of pixels, so thank you to our AMAZING staff of editors, writers, illustrators, and photographers for all that you do. Much of this love comes from you readers as well, so THANK YOU LOTS.” To celebrate, the Rookie team came out with The Rookie Yearbook One, a collection of articles of archived and original articles, interviews, photos, editorials and illustrations from Rookie contributors. Thanks to Tavi, there’s never been a better time to be a teenage girl.

Retail therapy

From being a small section of stylebible.ph, Preview magazine’s online home, The Mall (themall.ph) is now officially its own destination for online shopping. With over 70 brands available and weekly features like “Shop Her Style” and “Hot List,” The Mall also offers a virtual closet for you to “store” your favorite picks until you’re ready to buy them. The Mall is also a pretty good online address to showcase products from your fledging fashion or beauty brand, if you have one. Check out their website for weekly promos (like their ongoing “Create An Outfit Contest”) and for details on how to subscribe.

Model revival

We have to admit that we saw this coming. At the recently-concluded MTV VMAs, it was announced that Karlie Kloss and fellow supermodel Joan Smalls would be taking over the mics once held by the likes of Cindy Crawford, Molly Sims and Shalom Harlow as the hosts of MTV’s revival of House of Style. We wonder if media-savvy Karlie will pull any sweetly naive hijinks like Cindy (“What’s cannabis?”) or if Joan has any intention of topping Naomi Campbell’s zit cream stunt. On-cam flossing, perhaps? Also, is Mandy Moore trying to pass herself off as Karlie’s doppelgänger these days? Maybe she wants in on that House of Style gig. Or maybe she wants to bake cookies for Momofuku Milk Bar too. Girl sure needs a career. (Oh, snap!)

Dior No.1

While most would count gamine actress Audrey Tatou as the quintessential French woman, Marion Cotillard represents the more sensual and womanly side of French women. Classic French couture house Dior seems to agree. Wearing an original Bar jacket and flaring skirt from 1947, Marion is the cover of the first issue of seasonal magazine Dior, shot by Jean Baptiste Mondino. At 110 pages, this publication is more than just a catalog. According to Dior executive officer Sidney Tolendano, “It’s another way to communicate luxury. This is not a catalog. It’s fresh and modern. It’s how we see ourselves; our own maison. I think it translates perfectly the mood of the company right now.”
