Young Star

Video vixens

FROM COFFEE TO COCKTAILS - Celine Lopez -

Video may have killed the radio star but it sure did give birth to the video chick. As a proud child of the ‘80s, I grew up thinking Like A Virgin was a religious song — one of many I performed at my grandfather’s Christmas parties wearing a habit. No one had the heart to tell me what it really meant; I was only six, after all.

Nevertheless, MTV played a big part in my life growing up. Back then MTV played videos… the whole day. My particular favorite shows were Alternative Nation and Headbanger’s Ball, already highlighting my identity crisis. Whatever it was, I found inspiration not from the heroin chic models that were splayed in the glossies but from the women of video. Who could forget Helena Christensen slowly possessing Chris Isaak on the beach? Or that dress that Stephanie Seymour wore in November Rain? I remember thinking that video deserved an Oscar. I even got a band of friends to reenact the video when I first got a video recorder for Christmas. I tucked a white sleep dress into my tights, the habit now a veil, and showered myself with red roses, making a big dent in the production costs.

Now I don’t have to resort to amateur videos to celebrate them. Catch the memory of your favorite boudoir scenes. So here we are now, celebrating the video vixens!

Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler in Crazy

Every boy, man and woman certainly felt something seeing these naughty ingénues driving a convertible for the road trip of the ‘90s. Ditching school and making their money at a strip bar and capping it off by skinny-dipping with a farmer, Crazy celebrates youth and all the consequences that are still not apparent at that point in time — almost like a suspension of innocence.

Be Crazy: It was all about hair in that video. Whether it’s long or short, keep it soft with a conditioning treatment. Henri Calayag salons (call 799-1495) have amazing treatments that last for weeks!

Also keep those lips moisturized and pouty by whipping out some Lip Venom in Flash available at Beauty Bar.

Helena Christensen in Wicked Games

It’s all about skin and the gaze in this video.

Be Wicked: Bronze quick with Skin Food’s Sunshine Dark Bronzing Gel. It gives a super-deep hue in just one application so be sure to apply with care. For the daring gaze, line eyes with Mac eyeliner in Feline; its gel-like texture smudges sexily on its own.

Stephanie Seymour in November Rain and the Robert Palmer Girls

As disparate as these two sets of video sirens may be, they hold the same femme fatale look!

Addicted to red: It’s all about sleek hair and strong lips. Find the perfect red, most likely at the Shiseido counter. The perfect red for Asian skin is P23 Real Red. Slick hair with a healthy helping of gels such as Bench’s Fix gels in tubs, available at Bench stores.

Girls on Film

The controversial music video by Duran Duran that got censors riled up is still one of the most unforgettable moments in video history. Its unbashed sexual overtones and casual indifference to primness makes it the ultimate rebel video.

Girl on Film: Celebrate the naughtiness of the video with equally naughty lips. Schiap by Nars is the ultimate ‘80s pink!
