Finding the right guy for her sister

ASK NANAY - Socorro C. Ramos -

Dear Nanay,

I am writing on behalf of my sister. I love her very much and I want to see her happy. She is in her mid-30s and still single. Ever since my father died, she has been supporting my mother.  All of us are already married except her.  Sometimes I see her sad and we want her to also get married but she is always unlucky in love.  That is why I am writing to you so that she can find a partner.  She is so nice, which is why she is always taken advantage of; she is also religious and takes good care of people.  I hope this can be published in your column and I hope all the single guys with no commitments can write me at mysister2011@hotmail.com.  Thank you and more power. — IZZA

Dear Izza,

I am publishing this letter but I honestly do not know if this is where you will find the right man for your sister. But I guess you never know.

However, my advice is that if you should receive e-mails responding to your letter, make sure you screen the people very well.  Do not take risks and if you will meet anyone, make sure it is in a very public place where you or your sister will be safe. Mahirap na, hindi mo alam kung sino ang susulat sa e-mail address mo (you never know who will write to you).

Lastly, just because your sister is in her mid-30s is no reason to panic or feel depressed. She is still so young! I know there are many who feel that they should already be married by the time they are 30, but in today’s world, more and more women are getting married in their 30s or 40s.  There are actually many women who choose to remain single and prefer to be without a husband. Iba na ang panahon ngayon kaya huwag kang magalala (the times are different now, don’t worry).  The right person will come at the right time.

Sincerely,

Nanay

Summer school or vacation, which is more important?

Dear Nanay,

My wife and I need to make a choice between taking our family to Hong Kong for the first time for a well-deserved vacation, or just sending our two kids to summer school to learn something new. My wife wants to go to Hong Kong because she says it is also educational for the children to go on a trip somewhere they have never been and I want them to go to summer school instead. We cannot agree. Can you help tell us the correct thing to do? — MON and MAAN

Dear Mon And Maan,

I think you both have a valid point.

Naturally, sending the children to a summer program will allow them to learn new things. You can let them study art, a foreign language, or take up a sport like swimming or tennis. It will give them a chance to be exposed to something that perhaps they don’t get to see during the regular school year.

On the other hand, I also see your wife’s point. There are many things you can learn by traveling to a different country. You will learn new cultures, see how other people live and have the chance to go to places that we do not have here in the Philippines. So, most definitely, it will also be a learning experience for your children. Plus, the kids will probably enjoy the trip more.

So it is very difficult to say which option is the correct one for you. Off the top of my head, it is easy to say that you should always take the educational option. But as I said, going on a family vacation abroad for the first time does have its merits. Having said that, my advice is for the two of you to really discuss your options. If there is any doubt as to whether or not the trip to Hong Kong is worth it, then I would just go with the summer school. For me, it would be the safer choice. But if you both agree that the trip abroad is also a good option, then there is no reason for you to feel bad or guilty if you choose to take that trip.

Sincerely,

Nanay
