Leading the pack for 15 years: Pet One celebrates with Cesar Millan

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - On its 15th anniversary, Pet One continues to advocate responsible pet ownership by celebrating with Cesar Millan last April 27 at Eastwood Central Plaza. Cesar Millan, fondly known worldwide as the “Dog Whisperer,” shared his philosophy on how pet lovers can understand and relate to their pet dogs.

“Pet One is very happy to be part of this endeavor with Cesar Millan. Ever since it was founded, Pet One has been advocating proper care for man’s best friend. Treating them right is the key to have a great relationship with them,” says Edmond Tobias, Pet One general manager.

As the popularity of pet dogs continues to increase, misconceptions of proper dog care are also becoming more prevalent. In this light, Pet One would like to help dog owners to understand their dogs and become more responsible pet parents. According to Millan, it is the owner that needs training and not the dogs. â€œI am not gonna train dogs, I am gonna train people,” Millan said.

Millan said it is important to know what the dog wants instead of focusing on what we want from them. The key is to understand that dogs ultimately want “harmony and balance.” As animals they act naturally based on instinct. Animals are most in tune with energy levels of the people and environment around them. Thus, the bad behaviors of our pets are caused by these imbalances in the modern world. Dogs feel imbalances caused by our negative energy such as fear, anxiety, anger and insecurity. Pet owners must exhibit a firm and certain energy in disciplining them so they can establish respect from their dogs.

He was able to convey this idea through live demonstrations. One pet parent could not get his dog to give back the treat without being violently barked at or bitten. Cesar advised him to let go of his past fear and focus on the present with confidence. Without fear and anxiety, Cesar was easily able to retrieve the treat from the dog multiple times.

He pointed out that in order for dogs to prevent unlikely habits, owners must first learn how to become stable pack leaders. “Dogs do not follow unstable leaders, only humans do,” says Millan. Instead of pampering their pet dogs like humans, they must treat their dogs as dogs by giving them first discipline, exercise, and last affection. Giving them affection alone goes against their natural instinct. So we must be careful not to spoil our pets and give in to their every whim.

For the event, Pet One invited celebrities that are also avid pet owners to help spread responsible pet ownership like Chris Tiu, JC Intal and Bianca Gonzales, and pet columnist Kathy Moran.

“Cesar was hilarious! He could’ve passed for a stand-up comedian. He had our full attention for the entire two and a half hours,” said Chris Tiu. “Not only did I learn so much about my pets, but I appreciate them even more now. Very inspiring! Thank you, Cesar and thank you, Pet One!”

“Cesar Millan is an awesome speaker! I learned so much from him. Plus, I didn’t know The Dog Whisperer is a funny guy,” shared JC Intal after watching and meeting Cesar Millan.

To inspire the Filipino pet lovers, Cesar Millan ended the night with Mahatma Gandhi’s famous line: â€œThe greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
