Modern Living

A summer state of mind

FEAST WITH ME - Stephanie Zubiri - The Philippine Star

The wanderlusting call of blue skies, the happiness of sunshine and the calming sway of verdant trees in the wind. A brightly colored cocktail set against an aqua pool with that ubiquitous soft chink the ice makes as it languidly melts into the liquid. The days are long, the feeling of farniente is intoxicating and with all the beauty of a perfect day there is nothing else you can be but happy. Ahhh, summer. For us at Modern Living TV, summer is not just a season but a state of mind.

Our last three episodes of MLTV were all about how to embrace summer in your home and in your life. To live summer like a lifestyle, to really embody it we believe in a total approach starting with keeping fit and healthy so that we can be ready to partake in all kinds of summer activities but most importantly the beach.

We interviewed coach Bok Santos, trainer of celebrities and models, and also the people behind The Healthy House, how to achieve your personal fittest.

“It’s not so much about quantity but about the quality of your workout,” explains Santos. We learned that rather than over-exercising poorly it’s better to do fewer repetitions but more concentrated ones. One doesn’t have to spend long hours at the gym, but even 30 minutes is good enough as long as it is efficient, well-targeted and well-executed.

Being at the prime of one’s health is not achieved just by workouts alone, in fact many fitness experts believe that exercise is just 10 percent of the equation and good nutrition makes up for the other 90 percent.

Eating healthy is no easy task. Most of the time we are surrounded by oily, fried or sweet temptations especially if we have a busy schedule. For most people, eating well means having to do your own cooking and planning ahead, which can be difficult. The Healthy House offers a food delivery service that is specifically tailored to each one’s individual needs and not the usual one size fits all. “We listen to everyone’s concerns, take into account their daily activities, how much exercise they do and more importantly their goals,” explains CEO Gerard Garcia. “From there we can determine how many calories they need and what type of program suits them best.” Unlike most diet food deliveries, which are bland and unappealing, The Healthy House’s executive chef Jose Gaerlan painstakingly comes up with nutritious menus that taste great. “We understand that people need variety so I’m inspired by world cuisine. We also offer two types of cuisine per day that people can choose from and we often rotate menus as well,” he says. “We find ingredients that have a lot of flavor but that are low in calorie and sodium.” They also use quality produce, like salmon and fresh vegetables, cooked in a way that they retain their nutritional value. Well priced, The Healthy House is a perfect way to get you summer ready without having to think about it!

SUMMER AND THE HOME

Summer, most importantly, is an ambience, an atmosphere that can be recreated in your home and can bring you warmth and joy even way into the rainy season. Of course, one of the first things we think of during summer is the beach, adding small nautical and marine elements to your décor can help transport you every day to the seaside. Light colors that remind you of sandscapes, wooden furniture to reflect driftwood, decorative seashells, faux corals or sea life motifs are perfect accents that add to the beachy vibe.

Summer is not always synonymous to the beach but with overall happiness and joy. Barbecues, poolside cocktails and just a carefree state of mind. This is what Heima is all about. Bright happy colors, mixed patterns, not being afraid to go bold in the home… this is what their latest collection entitled “Life is a party” is all about. Bar cabinets, bar carts and accessories done up in vivid kitschy colors that remind us to have fun and live it up in the spirit of summer every day.

Here in the Philippines, the beginning of the warm months is also the season for art festivals and Manila is slowly becoming a hub for young contemporary local artists and even international ones like multi-awarded Paul Pfeiffer, whose exhibit “The Vitruvian Figure” runs at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design till April 16. The installation and multimedia exhibit is thought provoking, taking images out of context as a reflection of society. Refreshingly, Pfeiffer is more interested to hear what his audience has to say about his work rather than a particular message he means to convey. The summer is far from over and there are quite a few more art fairs coming up, notably Art in the Park this weekend.

As we wind down the second season of MLTV with our last episode airing tonight at 6 p.m. we would like to thank you for your continued support. Because in less than one month we will be back for an even more exciting third season.

From living spaces to living life beyond its confines… With more makeovers, gorgeous properties, and lifestyle and décor tips that we hope make modern living a fabulous experience.
