Sam likes it hot

WELL-BEING - Mylene Mendoza-Dayrit -
Top advertisers with budgets in the hundreds of millions know how popular he is while teenage girls dream of even just a single date with this freshest heartthrob. His sparkling smile first caught our attention in a toothpaste commercial – that plus his cute attempts at speaking Tagalog. Now, he’s in billboards and countless of posters.  Undoubtedly the most popular Pinoy Big Brother evictee, Sam Lloyd Milby with a debut movie Close to You and a self-titled album (that just turned gold) for Star Records is here to stay.

Born on May 23, 1984 in Ohio, Sam is a musically inclined athlete. Everybody knows by now that he plays the guitar, sings, and composes songs. And while it was mentioned that he competed in the US as a figure skater, the boy-next-door is also into motocross, hockey, tennis, and golf.  No wonder a lean body completes the handsome face.

What I can’t figure out is why his motto is: "Work like you don’t need the money, dance like nobody is watching and live like you’ve never been hurt."  Tough words, but I have only noticed the opposite. I have seen him slumped on a plane seat after a grueling schedule of mall appearances in Cebu.

In short, he is working too hard like there’s no tomorrow (but wisely perhaps since popularity can be very fleeting). And don’t the angst and sensitivity that help him compose songs stem from two failed relationships? Well, I guess his success now proves that he has moved on for the best.

Like a graceful figure skater, he glides through dizzying success with his killer smile. And while he could possibly win any girl right now, he has opted to focus on his career with only his guitar and music as constant company.

Sam is currently busy shooting commercials and doing photo shoots for various endorsements, getting ready for a new soap opera, and will star in another movie within the year. He is also regularly seen on ASAP and is still busy promoting his album on various mall shows.

Charming, pleasant, and extremely talented, Sam Milby can be a good role model for the youth. Philippine Star probes the life and style of the newest "crush ng bayan":

Philippine Star: Describe your lifestyle. How do you balance your physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being?

Sam Milby:
Well, lately I haven’t had time at all to work out so I just try to watch what I eat. It’s been a very long time since my last workout. (But we sighted him working out this morning.) Spiritually, as a Christian, I am very thankful for all the blessings and am trying to have a better relationship with God (I am part of Victory Christian Fellowship). Mentally and emotionally, being in showbiz, it’s mas mahirap kaysa akala ko (it’s more difficult than I thought). At times, it can be extremely stressful and frustrating so I just try to take it day by day, look to my friends for support, and ask God for the strength to make it through.

How did you get into so many sports?

My parents just wanted me to kind of dab into everything. I also had a lot of interests myself.

How did you prepare yourself physically to excel in these sports?

Lots and lots of training and practice especially when I was skating. I was training from 7 a.m. until around 4 p.m. with just a few breaks. I did home school for six years because I was so involved.

Did you have famous athletes as role models? If yes, what did they inspire you to become?

People like Scott Hamilton and Jeremy McGrath inspired me to train hard and showed me that all the hard work really pays off.

Do you have equal passion for sports and music?

Well, sports has really been put on hold because of everything that’s going on so it’s been more about music lately.

Who inspired your talent in music?  Does this talent run in the family?

I’ve just always had a passion for music but never thought I had the talent.

Did you ever have a weight problem?  Did you ever diet?  If yes, did you cheat (on what indulgences)?

Right after I quit skating, I worked at a fast-food restaurant and gained a lot of weight. I’m trying to diet a little right now. but I love food so I never have a strict diet.

Are you looking for a partner who also shares your passion for sports and music?  Does she have to live healthy?

It doesn’t have to be the same passion, just someone I can really connect with. I’d like to be with someone who at least tries to take care of herself.

What are your unhealthy vices if any?

Well, I quit smoking and I never really drink because I want to concentrate on my career, so pretty much it’s just the same unhealthy eating every now and then.

Describe your fashion style.

I’m just a pretty casual dresser, sometimes a little on the rocker side but mainly just very casual.

Are you a techno maniac? What are your toys?

I’m a very techie guy. I have a Nokia 8800, an XDA IIs, a 60GB Video i-Pod, and a Powerbook G4.

How do you relax and manage stress?

Listen to music, watch a movie, play video games, and play my guitar …

What do you miss most about being a "common" guy?

The privacy.

What do you like most about being a celebrity?

Traveling.

What is the best health tip you can give?

Just always try to eat right and take care of yourself.
