‘Imagining Identity: 100 Filipino Self-Portraits’ at Finale

MANILA, Philippines - A total of 100 self-portraits of Filipino artists from the Paulino and Hetty Que art collection are showcased in “Imagining Identity: 100 Filipino Self-Portraits,” which opens on Feb. 9 at Finale Art File, Warehouse 17, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Chino Roces Ave., Makati City. The show runs until March 4.

The collection, personally handpicked for public viewing by Que, is an extensive survey of various works produced from 1826 to 2011. The oldest artist featured in the collection is Damian Domingo (b.1796-d.1833), the first Filipino painter to depart from the tradition of religious art under Spanish colonization; the youngest is Belgian-Filipino artist Francis Luis Commeyne (b.1988).

The collection shows various ways by which Filipino visual artists — who have altered our ways of seeing the world — represent themselves: from traditional self-portraits to more concept-based works.

Two shows at Boston Gallery

Boston Art Gallery, in collaboration with Project Space Pilipinas, presents two international exhibitions — “SAGER Manila,” a group show participated by seven Southeast Asian artists; and “Glittering Surfaces” by German artist Patricia Thoma — slated from Feb. 4 to 21 at Boston Art Gallery, 72 Lantana St., Cubao, QC.

In “SAGER Manila,” Chong Kim Chiew (Kuala Lumpur), Azam Aris (Kuala Lumpur), Nugroho Heri Cahyono (Jogjakarta), Choiruddin (Jogjakarta), Christopher Zamora (Manila), Iggy Rodriguez (Manila), and Zean Cabangis (Manila) present a diverse selection of works produced during their month-long artist residency in the Philippines.

The Southeast Asia Art Group Exchange Residency (SAGER) is a regional residency program organized by the House of Matahati (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Tenggara Artland (Jogjakarta, Indonesia) and Project Space Pilipinas (Manila, Philippines). The program aims to strengthen artistic ties around the region through building effective networks that would establish better understanding of culture and the arts among neighboring Asian art communities.

In “Glittering Surfaces,” Thoma presents hand-sewn dresses made of recycled plastic bags she collected from different supermarkets she have visited.

Paulo Vinluan presents his “Dog Toy” at Secret Fresh, ground floor, Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Ave., Greenhills.

“Dog Toy” is based on Vinluan’s recurring dog character, a dark suited dog-man in allegorical tableaus depicting comically sinister messages of what power and value means in modern society, and the pursuit of which that necessitates such cloak of betrayal as “wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
