Daa sizzles as Knights post No. 4

- Joey Villar -

Dino Daa churned out a double-double performance yesterday, firing 26 points and hauling down 19 rebounds to power Letran to a 71-67 victory over San Sebastian College for  the solo lead in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Astrodome.

The lefthanded Daa combined with RJ Jazul and Alvin Cabonce in a big fourth quarter Letran surge that saw the Knights uncork a decisive 13-0 run to turn a three-point deficit into a 58-48 lead.

The Knights then foiled the Stags’ repeated rallies to post their fourth straight victory and regain the solo lead.

“I told my players to make it simple by going to Dino Daa and he delivered,” said Letran coach Louie Alas.

Cabonce backed up Daa with 14 points, including six straight in the stretch, while the prolific Jazul scattered 11 points despite putting emphasis on assists.

“Before the game, I talked to RJ to pass and defer to his teammates more because I’m worried that we would be too predictable if we always go to him. That’s exactly what we did,” said Alas.

True enough, all but one of the 11 players Alas used scored.

In the other game, Jose Rizal blasted Perpetual Help, 74-57, for its second straight win after dropping its first two games.

The Altas fell to their fourth setback in five starts.

Like in their earlier games, the Stags raced to another riproaring start only to disintegrate in the fourth quarter. They tumbled to their fourth straight loss against a win.
