Manila designer takes the spotlight in WWD

JACKIE O' FLASH - Bea J. Ledesma -

Another designer is being feted this week during the bustling round of shows at New York Fashion Week.

After Rajo’s Women’s Wear Daily cover last week, one more local talent earned bragging rights after being honored with a cover for the NY industry bible. This time jeweler Wynn Wynn Ong garners the coveted front page with a feature on her Naga label.

The jewelry designer’s stable of pieces includes a shell clutch ornamented with quartz, tourmaline and pearl that merited WWD’s cover.

The Burma-born, Manila-based creative talent’s collection, sold at Firma, centers on the adventures of a spider named Stella. Dubbed “All Bark, Some Bite,” the series follows the adventures of Stella, a lemon-citrine spider, as displayed on a congregation of cuffs modeled to look like bark. “It’s a day in the life of Stella,” Ong tells WWD, “and what she encounters as she goes up the tree.”

The publication’s fascination with Ong’s work doesn’t end there, citing her creature-inspired pieces, a vivid ensemble of avian brooches, seahorse rings and stone-embellished, plankton-eque neckpieces as particularly noteworthy.

Another local face making the rounds is Ford winner, CalCarrie’s model and YStyle vet Chat Almarvez, who, to date, has walked over 11 shows during New York Fashion Week. The statuesque model walked for Diane von Furstenburg Rachel Comey, Lacoste, Cynthia Steffe and plenty more.
