Make me beautiful

- Cat Juan -
The average woman likes makeup. With a dab of her powder compact, a swoosh of her eye brush, and a swipe of lipstick she is magically transformed into whatever she wants to be. Vixen yesterday, school girl tomorrow, and maybe just a more colorful version of her natural self today. But some women have taken their liking for makeup and turned it into a true love for the art. These four new freelance makeup artists are painting their way to big dreams. They have the talent, the pure love (or is it obsession?) for all those pretty products, and the energy to reach high. We asked them to conceptualize their own beauty editorial to showcase their skill and show us how we can be just a tad more like them.
Erica Paredes
With a love for makeup running through her blood since her early teens, Erica always knew that she wanted to be a makeup artist. Leaving a high-position job as beauty editor of a leading teen magazine was the first step to fulfilling her goal. Just last year she went on to take an extensive course at the London School of Beauty and Makeup in England and after working with most of the glossy publications here in the Philippines is now based in Sydney and continually building her resume. "The best thing about being a freelance artist is meeting a lot of different people and getting to work with friends that I usually only got to see during events. Also, I have a two-year-old daughter so it’s good that I can fix my own schedule and balance time with her and work." For this shoot, Erica decided to seek a muse in long time friend Amina Aranaz (who was six months pregnant at the time) and turned her into a 1960s sex siren inspired by larger-than-life Bridgitte Bardot, " I read somewhere that John Lennon thought she was the embodiment of perfection had a huge crush on her all his life," she laughs.

Tatin Yang

"I’m Tatin and I aim to make panget history" was the best statement this bubbly makeup artist gave for her interview. Tatin has always had a fascination for makeup; as a child she would replicate her mother’s looks and put fake bruises on her siblings but what really made her decide to finally take it on as a career was during her lolo’s wake. While grieving she was still checking out what shade of lipstick they used on him (too pink in her opinion), and that’s when she knew a calling had been decided. She loves playing with bright colors and textures; looks that scream fantasy and luminosity are her favorite. For this shoot she turned professional model Joy into a living doll, with pastel shades and porcelain skin. "I think the best part of my job is that I get paid to do something I love. I actually look forward to work all the time. It’s something I never tire of." With her bubbly disposition and her true love for her art, Tatin is bound to reach her goal of eradicating panget forever.

Sabs Hernandez
Once dubbed by Preview magazine as one of the best makeup artists in achieving the "no-makeup, makeup look," Sabs wanted to steer clear of that label for YStyle and show everyone that she can also take the road of fashion extreme. Since the age of 14, Sabs has had a passion for makeup. She initially studied countless makeup books while working in hotel sales after college. But when she fully realized that a career in makeup was where she wanted to be she immediately enrolled at the ICI training center of Franck Provost, and then went on to take more classes at Vogue It Is Beauty School in Hong Kong and at the Khun Joe Cosmetology School in Bangkok. Sabs believes in the importance of investing in great, natural-looking foundation; if it fits your skin tone perfectly you will look flawless. Sabs also believes in never putting everyone in the same mold. "I believe that all women possess a unique and natural beauty that can be enhanced through the correct use of makeup products. I provide makeup applications that are customized to each person based on her particular features, not based on the latest trends."

Carmen Araneta Reyes
Starting out as a production designer and stylist gave Carmen the edge to know what it is she wanted as a full-time makeup artist. With her naturally green eyes and heavily inked tattoo on her shoulder, Carmen fits the role of stylish pretty darn well. After training at ICI Training Center for makeup here in Makati, Carmen has gone on to do makeup for a variety of broadsheets and print ads. Carmen says that patience and hard work are needed to become a successful makeup artist. "You have to want it, no, you have to love it!" she strongly states. "I like bringing out people’s good features and making them look as natural as possible. I also like playing around with different looks on models because…anything that would look weird or wacky on someone else wouldn’t on a model if done properly." For YStyle Carmen decided to gather inspiration from the Middle East. "Very dark eyes, beautifully dramatic," she adds.
