Young Star

The Melody of Carol

- Leah Katigbak -
Clear as crystal is her voice. Every hymn she sings is a melody. Her songs warm the heart and touch the soul. That golden voice brings out the best in her. At 22, Carol Banawa is indeed a young star!

The youngest from a musically inclined family, she began singing at three for the choir.

"Lumaki akong sobrang idol ko talaga sina kuya at ate. Ang target ko talaga sa choir. I never saw myself going solo," she shares. She used to arrange her siblings’ costumes, and is now the biggest star in the family. "Kasi sa aming tatlo, ako talaga yung pinakamakapal ang mukha (laughs), pinakamadaldal."

By eight years old, Carol was able to record an album. Upon joining Munting Mutya of the now defunct Lunch Date, Ivory Records noticed her and made an offer for her to record a Children’s Contest Pieces album. Eventually, other offers began pouring in. Unfortunately, her dad wouldn’t allow her to pursue a showbiz career because of her studies. Nineteen ninety four marked her return in showbiz with Ang TV. She was not very serious with the auditions but was called back. Shortly after, she was launched with Star Circle batch 4. Since then she has been very well on her way to success.

To date, Carol has produced three albums: a self-titled album in 1997, a repackage of that in 2000, and Transition in 2001 which includes the recent hits Muntik na Kitang Minahal and Stay which she co-wrote. At the same time, she plays Melody in the teleserye Bituin, co-starring with Nora Aunor.

Indeed, Carol Banawa has gone far. But then again, it’s not all fame and glamour that’s important to her. Her melody, her music, her golden voice will always be remembered by the people who love and support her.
