Savage Garden Minus One

- Gabbie Reyes -
After 10 years in a band and two albums that sold over 20 million copies worldwide, the Australian-born Darren Hayes of the group Savage Garden has now released his first solo album, Spin.

Spin
is the product of a year of self-rediscovery and reminiscing of music he had grown up with.

"This record is true to the music I grew up listening to – whether it be Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, or Marvin Gaye. When I first wanting to sing and getting turned on by music, that’s what I would jump up and down to," Hayes muses.

He also adds some electronica into the scene with the help of newcomer and experimental electronic artist , Robert Conley of Specificus. Spin offers its listeners a mixture of the 80’s pop rock and modern electronic music. It is described as an antidote to the darker side of humanity, bursting with rhythmic spirit and lyrical heart. Hayes co-produced Spin with Grammy-Award winning Walter Afanasieff, who is also responsible for the success of people like Ricky Martin and Mariah Carey.

While the breaking up of Savage Garden came as a surprise to fans all over, Hayes claims that he and his partner Daniel Jones parted in good terms. He called it "a natural progression." He shares, "To me, Savage Garden always had an expiry date. I am very pleased that Daniel and I left this incredible experience in the highest of high notes, and I hope that people can just be happy for us. We’re continuing on, just in separate ways."

Having to adjust to being a solo artist was not too difficult, but, of course, there were several changes. "As a solo artist," Hayes claims, "people want to know you are as person more. They care about what you look like, what you’re dressed in, who you’re dating. I’ve just recently experienced that and it’s been a shock to me because I’ve always been able to hide behind the shelter of the band. It was Savage Garden, not me. "However, not everything has been a set back.

Hayes, now sporting a new look very different from what we have been accustomed to, has allowed his natural blond hair to grow back and his attire is more laid back and casual. He says that he feels solo work allows for a truer representation of who he is. (He is most comfortable the way he is now.) "It’s who I am, whether they like it or not," says Hayes.

Spin’s
first single, "Insatiable," written and produced by Hayes and Afanasieff, is the song that Hayes hopes will reintroduce himself as an individual. "This one just flowed. It is absolutely one of my favorite songs that I have ever written." The two other songs in the album, Hayes says, which described him the most are "Good Enough" and "Like It Or Not."

He shares, "If you want to know me, these songs are what you listen to; that’s me!" Hayes claims to be a dreamer, a romantic, and an idealist; and these two songs have a bit of each side. And the song "Crush(1980ME)" is Hayes’ way of paying homage to the melodic influences of his childhood.

Darren Hayes lives in San Francisco, and will soon be travelling around the world in support of Spin, which is due for release internationally this March. After a year of on-and-off co-writing and collaborating, Hayes says, "I feel unleashed. I’m old-fashioned entertainer and I want to do this until I can’t walk anymore."
