Thank God for Assumption!

- Mons Romulo -

It’s been more than a month since my batch, Assumption High School Class 1982, celebrated our grand velada at the Mother Rose Hall of our beloved school, Assumption, San Lorenzo.

My thoughts keep going back to our dance rehearsals, finding myself  turning the pages of our memory book, not getting tired of daydreaming and recalling the happy faces and smiles of my batch mates — many of  who still look exactly like they did 25 years ago.

Right after our high school graduation,  most of us went to different colleges, to different parts of the world in search of our dreams. In years past, whenever I would get messages to meet up  with some of my batch mates I would always forget the date since I was busy  with my family and work. But my classmate Vina Francisco was right when she said, “There must be something as we get into our 40s that makes us yearn for the past.”

“Jubilee” is described as a time of celebration after 50 years of slavery, strife and famine. Why, then, do Assumption girls celebrate their jubilee as early as 25 years after high school graduation? Whatever the reason, we are thankful that our silver jubilee came at a time when we needed it most!

The 25th anniversary is the perfect time for all of us to reconnect, look back at the years that prepared us to face the present, recall the beautiful memories we had during our high school days and search far and wide for the friends we made. How lucky we are that at Assumption we are given the perfect opportunity to do all this.

No other all-girls high school prepares for its silver jubilee like we do. It takes us years to do it, to reconnect, to raise money to give back to our alma mater and to decide how best we want to represent ourselves 25 years after graduation.

We, the Assumption Class of 1982, this year’s silver jubilarians, chose to represent ourselves by saying “Thank God for Assumption!” Thank you to the women who have helped us become what we are today, thank you for giving us lifelong friends, thank you for the opportunity to celebrate and rejoice

And thank you for a reunion we will never forget. We celebrated who we have become in a way that would make Saint Marie Eugenie proud to call us her Assumption girls!
