Wanted: Ogilvy medical scholars

- Jennifer Ong -
Complications have plagued the medical world recently. They are not caused by misdiagnosis or malpractice but rather, a series of misunderstandings. The doctor, the medical expert, and the patient often don’t talk a great deal. And if they do, not everything said by one is readily understood by the other. Hence, there is a dire need to improve the state of healthcare communications today. And it must be done soon, before it starts claiming lives.

Graham Edwards has known this problem all too well. The CEO for the Asia Pacific Region of Ogilvy Healthworld, he has been tasked to help medical professionals and medical journalists choose the right words to write and say.

Ogilvy Healthworld is a healthcare communications group with an extensive global reach. With various offices throughout North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the company is dead-set on a mission to communicate healthcare the way it should be — with clarity, creativity, and unparalleled truth.

Among Ogilvy Healthworld’s core services are advertising, public relations, direct to consumer and/or direct to patient communication services, relationship marketing, brand development, clinical trial recruitment, and global integration. The company is also at the forefront of medical education.

Ogilvy Healthworld’s medical education program covers a wide range of subjects, including strategic planning, publications management, opinion leader development, meetings, continuing medical education, corporate incentive programs, field force programs, and promotional programs. But here in the Philippines, Ogilvy Healthworld Asia Pacific goes one step further with the launch of its medical education enrichment program.

The medical education enrichment program is the first of its kind for Ogilvy Healthworld. It is a scholarship program that entitles four successful applicants to a chance to take part in a three-month training at Ogilvy Healthworld’s offices in Singapore or Sydney.

Complete with accommodations and stipend, the program will also shoulder the scholars’ airfare expenses and visa fees. And with all that taken care of, the scholars are expected to simply enjoy and learn a lot from Ogilvy Healthworld’s training.

During the training period, Ogilvy Healthworld will teach its scholars about medical education, medical copywriting, patient activation, medical advertising, and public relations. And it is from here that Ogilvy Healthworld hopes that more opportunities would open up to these students within the healthcare industry.

The program is open to Filipino residents only. To quality, one should be a healthcare journalist, marketer or a medical professional. An application form must be completed along with an essay on "The Role of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Medical Marketing." This, along with two letters of reference, must be submitted to the Ogilvy Public Relations office on or before May 31, 2007. Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide is located at 15F Philam Tower, Paseo de Roxas corner Ayala Avenue, Makati, Metro Manila with telephone number 885-0001.

The message is clear, it’s time for the healthcare world to change the way it talks. And you can take part in making this happen by being an Ogilvy Healthworld scholar.
