Enjoy Tex-Mex food to the max

- Jennifer Ong -

MANILA, Philippines - There are three reasons to go to Cantina: 1. To eat authentic Tex-Mex food. 2. To enjoy various salsas, 3. To feast like there’s no tomorrow!

Yep, in Cantina, you can have as much salsa as you like and you can also enjoy all the tacos, burritos, and more to your heart’s content!

It’s no secret that Cantina is the sister of another chic restaurant, Tia Maria’s. This humble dining establishment started out with one branch a mere walking distance from Ateneo de Manila University in Katipunan. But soon, it found itself opening up more branches in Makati (De la Rosa Car Park 1) and recently, at SM Mall of Asia.

Trust Cantina to serve up fresh food with a fresh vibe. The Tex-Mex classics have been matched with some down-home local favorites, but with a little bit of Cantina’s gourmet touch.

When in Cantina, you cannot miss out on the classics. For starters, there’s the crowd favorite, the Nachos Grande, a plate full of nacho chips topped with beef, black olives, jalapeños, cheddar cheese sauce, salsa, and sour cream. There’s also the famous flautas, which are deep-fried flour tortillas filled with cheese and jalapeño strips, and served with some ranchero sauce.

The tacos, soft or crispy, have always been to die for. Choose between chicken and beef, and they’re going to pack up your tacos with some cheese and lettuce, then serve it with some chips and salsa on the side. Meanwhile, there are those dreamy enchiladas, flour tortillas, also filled with your choice of beef or chicken and ranchero sauce, then smothered with cheese and sour cream, and served with Mexican rice on the side.

Also very hearty is Cantina’s famous burrito. First, choose your filling: carnitas (grilled pork), carne picada (ground beef), pollo al carbon (chicken), carne asada (grilled striploin), cabeza de puerco (sisig) or chorizo. After which, your burrito will also be stuffed with some Mexican rice, veggies, and tomatoes, then rolled up and served with some chips and salsa.

All of these classics go well with just about anything in the salsa bar. Choose from pico de gallo, grilled onion & tomato, salsa verde, salsa fresca, pickled onion, and pickled chili. Now, if you think all that ain’t enough to stuff you, then try some of Cantina’s even heartier fare. Go for one of the Combo Locos. There’s Surf N Turf, Tacorito, Flautaladas, Tacowings, Chicadillas, mixed grill, porkchops, and quarter chicken.

Meanwhile, there are also some value meals, including carnitas, chicken peri-peri, carne asada, pollo strips, chorizo, grilled liempo and pork barbecue.

And for dessert, try Cantina’s very creamy leche flan, a sweet ending to another perfect meal at Cantina.
