The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - President Benigno Aquino III will attend the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit slated for Dec. 12-14 in Tokyo, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said today.

The DFA said in a statement that Aquino and his delegation will arrive in Tokyo on Dec. 12 for a number of bilateral events and meetings.

Aquino is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Dec. 13.

The DFA said the two leaders will discuss cooperation on disaster management and reconstruction in the wake of typhoon Haiyan, economic concerns, maritime cooperation, and the Mindanao peace process.

They will also witness the signing of three exchanges of notes on a post-disaster standby loan amounting to $100 million, a loan of $187 million for the Philippine Coast Guard, and a revised route schedule for the Philippines- Japan Air Services Agreement.

During the Commemorative Summit, leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and Japan will review the accomplishment of the past 40 years and set the future direction for ASEAN-Japan relations.

The DFA said there will be two "outcome documents" from the summit - a vision statement of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and the Joint Statement of the ASEAN-Japan Summit.

The vision statement will focus on long-term cooperation between ASEAN and Japan while the Joint Statement will "address regional and international issues beyond the dialogue partnership. "
