From Geneva with love: Dining at L’Entrecote Manila

John O. Villavicencio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Much has been said about the goodness of authentic French cuisine, which is very popular around the world. France is not only rich in history and beautiful scenery, it is also well-known for its sumptuous steaks, sauces, breads and pastries. Good thing L’Entrecote Manila offers exclusive French cuisine that is different by virtue of its distinct Filipino influence.

Whatever challenges faced by L’Entecote during its pioneering years, the restaurant was successful in putting up its first branch in the Philippines in September 2010, offering the genuine French dishes that Filipinos enjoy. The L’Entrecote concept originated in Geneva, Switzerland, where famous homemade cheeses are found.  It is also a popular nickname of an iconic group of restaurants by the Gineste de Saurs family. These restaurants serve only steak and pommes frites, commonly known as French fries.

L’Entrecote wanted to offer its famous L’Entrecote steak with secret herb butter sauce to the Philippines — “The dish that L’Entrecote is known for,” according to Erika Segundo, marketing manager in the Philippines.

Located in progressive Bonifacio Global City, in the heart of Burgos Circle, L’Entrecote is perfect for you if you’re looking for a nice to place to enjoy steak at a reasonable price.

You can start your dining experience with Baked Mussels au Café de Paris, perfect with garlic, parsley and lemon butter. In France, you can never go wrong with the delicious Pissaladiere, a Southern French pizza with a Swiss twist, where you can taste gruyere cheese with black olives, anchovies and puff-pastry onions. Be sure to taste the tomato cream soup with its lingering deep, spicy flavor.

The appetizers are satisfying but make sure to save some space for the exciting entrees. The Crispy French Duck Leg Confit is cooked with roasted potatoes, caramelized onions and orange chutney spiced up with Espelette pepper. A distinct Swiss dining experience can also be had with the original Swiss cheese fondue — hot melted Swiss cheese and breads. The breads are to die for, by the way, with Appenzeller, wine maker, and Gruyere cheeses in Kirsch liqueur.

The bestseller and all-time favorite is the L’Entrecote Menu with mixed green salad tossed in house dressing with walnuts, US choice sirloin steak topped with their secret herb butter sauce and unlimited fries. You just have to savor its rich flavor.

For dessert, you can try their crepe Suzette, a French crepe with orange sauce and vanilla ice cream or a chocolate mousse, from a special Swiss mousse recipe.

“We want to go away from the typical ‘fine dining’ associated with French cuisine,” explains Segundo. “L’Entrecote Manila is a cozy Swiss-French bistro. It’s more on the casual dining side rather than fine dining.”

L’Entrecote plans to redesign a new menu in the months to come. With its European ambiance, the restaurant is a great place to hang out with your friends in Burgos Circle.
