Winwyn Marquez on joining Bb. Pilipinas 2015: It’s really a risk

MANILA, Philippines - “I think it was really fate na tinuloy ko talaga siya.”

 

Thus said Winwyn Marquez, the daughter of showbiz personalities Joey Marquez and Alma Moreno, on her decision to join this year’s Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant.

It was earlier reported that the GMA-7 artist is one of the 24 candidates of the 2015 Bb. Pilipinas, the local pageant that’s responsible for selecting the country’s representative for five international beauty contests, including Miss Universe. 

 

In an interview with Philstar.com during the candidates’ visit to the Bb. Pilipinas museum at the Gateway Tower in Quezon City on Tuesday, Winwyn said she decided to try out for the pageant a day before the last screening day of Bb. Pilipinas.

 

“Biglaan lang kasi lahat. I just felt na I was ready. Ready na ako, wala lang talagang rason. Yung feeling na game na,” she told Philstar.com.

 

Winwyn -- who has starred in a number of TV shows such as “Kambal Sirena,” “Dormitoryo” and “Sunday All Stars” -- is aware joining the beauty pageant will require a number of sacrifices from her. For one, she had to take a leave from her work at GMA-7.

 

“I asked for a leave sa GMA,” she said, expecting Bb. Pilipinas candidates are required not to have an existing contract during the time of the pageant.

 

Winwyn added, “It’s just really a risk.”

 

“If you really want something, you will take a risk. And I took a risk for that,” she said.

 

The 22-year-old said joining a beauty pageant has always been a plan of hers even before entering showbiz. 

 

“I’ve always been very vocal about it. Lagi kong sinasabi na gusto kong sumali. Yun talaga yung gusto kong gawin. But kailangan pa madagdagan yung confidence ko, and yung showbiz nakatulong na rin sa akin,” she explained.

 

She said her showbiz experience helped her become more conscious, confident and disciplined--traits she believes can help her in the competition.

 

Her parents Alma and Joey support their daughter, but Winwyn said her father was apprehensive at first.

 

“Nagulat sila kasi hindi ako nakapagsabi sa kanila na magscre-screening ako kasi everything happened so fast,” Winwyn shared.

 

“My mom, super excited. My dad, medyo alanganin. Pero syempre, dad siya. Worried lang siya kasi two piece and everything and baka i-criticize ako ng mga tao. But eventually naman he talked me and full support na siya sa akin,” she added.

 

Is there additional pressure to perform well in the competition because she came from a show business?  Candidates with showbiz background have done well in the beauty pageants as of late, including Miss World Philippines 2014 Valerie Weigmann and Miss World 2013 Megan Young. 

 

“Kung sasabihin kong hindi, I’m lying. Ang laki ng pressure. Pero yung pressure na yun, ginagamit ko na lang para galingan ko sa pageant,” she said.

 

Winwyn further said: “I don’t want to expect anything, e. I just want to have fun and show people that I can do it.” 

 

“Come what may, di ba? Kung ano ang ibigay ni Lord sa akin, tatanggapin ko,” she ended.
