UAAP suspends UP coach Madrid for 2 games

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The UAAP has suspended UP head coach Rey Madrid for two games for his point-shaving accusation on a referee.

UAAP commissioner Andy Jao confirmed Madrid’s suspension, which the coach will serve in the Maroons’ games against La Salle on Aug. 6 and Adamson on Aug. 9.

The suspension stemmed from Madrid’s tirade against referee Ian Borbe after the Maroons lost to the UST Tigers last Saturday.

The mentor claimed that Borbe had been deliberately sending UST to the free throw line by calling fouls on UP in a game already clearly won by the Tigers.

A surprised Madrid questioned the suspension, which he branded as “harsh.”

"I think it’s too harsh because I wasn't expecting to be given with such sanction. I already apologized for what I have done and even talked to him (Jao) personally,” Madrid said.

The coach now plans to appeal the sanction.

“I just aired my view on what can be improved on the officiating. If this is their action, I need some clarification. I plan to appeal the suspension and i also want to talk to him (Jao) again,” he added.

The Maroons are currently in the cellar with an 0-5 win-loss record. – With report from Olmin Leyba
