Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Get dotty with â€˜I Love Kusama’

MANILA, Philippines - Dots have never been this chic, and we’re about to see how painfully fabulous they are. Of course, the dots in question are Yayoi Kusama’s, the Japanese visionary who elevated gourds, tentacles, spots and phallic imagery to highbrow status. Her installations are highly regarded worldwide, from New York’s Museum of Modern Art to London’s Tate Modern. Of course, many people will associate her with the dots she irreverently scattered all over Louis Vuitton stores and products, revolutionizing the luxury bags alongside Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse. This July, the Ayala Museum is featuring her artworks for the “I Love Kusama” exhibit, with the help of Lito and Kim Camacho, two leading Filipino Kusama collectors. The exhibit will open on Tuesday and will be on display until Sept. 1, at the Ground Floor Gallery and Third Floor Glass Lane of the Ayala Museum.

Turn Japanese at the Eiga Sai Japanese film festival

This month, it’s Japan’s turn to host festivities after France and Spain, which held music and film festivals last month. This July, Shangri-La Plaza is playing host to Eiga Sai, a film festival featuring 13 outstanding Japanese films. The films are a well-curated mix of drama, suspense, action, adventure and animation, with the beloved Always: Sunset on Third Street serving as the cherry on top. The films were selected for their portrayal of contemporary Japanese culture, which is a great introduction to our neighboring country. Eiga Sai screened films since last week, and will end its run tomorrow at the Shangri-La Plaza, free of charge.

Experience Southern hospitality at Heima + Trilogy

Southerners have to trek all the way to the Makati and Brixton branches of Heima to experience the world only they can offer — a universe of pretty things and fabulous music. But for a short time, Heima is letting cool kids in the know experience a pocket universe of Heima goodness in the Alabang Town Center branch of Trilogy. Heima is about to experience true Southern hospitality with Heima Down South, a little get-together for its friends down under. The gig will feature electronica, witch house/crypt hop, and IDM music from Love in Athens, KLM†††BRNG, and The Afterschool Special. The party promises food, drinks, and fun, fun, fun. And if that runs out, we’ll always have Heima.

Pop up at Instagig

If you’re in the mood for music, make sure to head on over to High Street in BGC tonight for Instagig, a pop-up gig of sorts where bands perform on a parked stage truck. The music is a mix of jazz, trance, indie, shoegaze-electro, triphop, and R&B from Jennifer Blair-Bianco, Pulso, Maude, Taken by Cars, Yolanda Moon, Up Dharma Down and Quest. The chill music is the perfect way to unwind and regain our bearings, so we highly recommend you visit 7th Avenue in BGC, at 7 p.m.
