Close encounters of the birdwatching kind

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In Asia about 565 species of birds can be found in the Philippines, 165 of which are endemic or found only in the country. At best, birdwatching can introduce not only what common types of birds that can be found, but also their feeding and breeding habits. It can also be enjoyed without the need for expensive equipment; only a pair of good binoculars would be a trusty companion.

Haribon Foundation invites budding audobons and nature enthusiasts to join them as it starts a “Basic Birdwatching Course for Beginners” which aims to expose Haribon members to the importance of biodiversity and the reality of its threats, by taking them outdoors to nature. By the end of the course, members will have earned the knowledge and experience and enjoy birdwatching.

The appreciation of nature through birds will raise more interest on other species and biodiversity in general, so that we can help protect them and the habitats where they thrive.

The six sessions of the course will take participants to places in Luzon and Visayas where various bird species both common and rare can be found, and will consist of a combination of lectures conducted by known experts in the field, plus field trips spread over six consecutive Saturdays. The basic cost for each of the six sessions is only P597 per person, which covers the course materials, guide fees, training, equipment rental, Haribon birdwatching manual, and a certificate of completion (transportation, accommodations, and entrance fees are not included). Haribon passport holders will be given five stamps for joining the course and 18 stamps upon its completion.

The course now includes bird photography mentoring sessions to be conducted by Kdon Galay, part of the first batch of graduates of the course.

This special course is for Haribon members only. Non-members are welcome to join by applying for membership.
