Manila Rotary commits to help in rehabilitation of Visayas

THIS WEEK ON PEOPLEASIA - The Philippine Star

The Rotary Club of Manila is looking forward to another year of service to the community. Being a moving force in nation-building, it always invites resource persons to its regular Thursday meetings who would help members get a better grasp of what is happening in the country. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando “Say” Tetangco Jr. was the guest speaker last Jan. 9 — the first for this year — where he talked about the country’s gross international reserves and how more money can be poured into the economy.

This week, it was the turn of Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez to guest in the “Talk Thursday” session of the Manila Rotary held at the Manila Polo Club. Romualdez discussed the situation of typhoon Yolanda survivors, updates on the rehabilitation work in the devastated areas, and the proposed House Bill 3640 establishing the Tacloban City Economic Zone to help speed up rehabilitation by providing tax-based incentives for businessmen and investors, among other measures.

The Manila Rotary has pledged to help in the rehabilitation efforts for the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda and Romualdez certainly had an interesting exchange of ideas and opinions with the Club members during the question-and-answer session.

The Rotary Club of Manila is the oldest and most prestigious in Asia, and it’s definitely a badge of distinction if one gets invited as a guest speaker because the members come from the top echelons of society — from businessmen to bankers to lawyers, doctors, architects and politicians, among others.
