Star Dream Girl: Karel Marquez

-
Baby-faced commercial beauty endorser Karel Marquez Santos is Karel Marquez to her growing number of fans. Karel may be your typical college girl in the sense that she loathes having problems with her complexion. On the other hand, she is the picture of a bubbly confident young lass who is now drawing attention in that TV ad where she is being chased by three good-looking guys.

Petite Karel is a 17-year-old high school graduate of Reedley International School in Pasig City. Besides being the Pond’s girl, she is the cool, oh-so natural MYX veejay who never tires of playing and presenting the freshest and most favored music videos and answering audience requests on air.

Karel was first noticed when she played the mean Penelope character in the defunct ABS-CBN’s youth-oriented show Berks. In that show, the audience at first hated Karel’s character but eventually learned to love her when Penelope changed into a goody-good person.

"I really wanted to become an actress or to be on TV," says Karel. "At first, my mom did not allow me to enter showbusiness because I wasn’t finished with school then and she believed it would be tough for me to manage my (would-be showbiz) schedule."

Karel’s mom was correct all along, being familiar with the ins and outs of showbiz. Mom is no other than singer-actress Pinky Marquez. Karel’s father is surgeon Eduardo Santos. Karel started auditioning when she was nearly finished with her high school studies.

Since music is also a big part of her life, Karel performs every Thursday of this month at Dish in ABS-CBN, Quezon City. Karel sings pop, rock and alternative music.

Though she is reveling in her early success, Karel still prioritizes her studies. This school year, she will be a freshman at the Thames International School, taking up Business Administration major in Marketing.

How does Karel manage her schedule? Karel, who wishes to put up a restaurant or a spa, replies, "It’s just a matter of time management, and as my mom would put it, ‘As long as you can do it.’ "

"Do what is right," ends Karel on becoming successful. "Be strong and always pray." –Jerry Donato
