Camus: A toast to 150 years of cognac excellence

MANILA, Philippines -For the great house of Camus, the secret to success is simply family. Theirs is a name that’s synonymous to one of the finest cognacs in the world.  Their legacy comes from 150 years of experience and five generations of premium cognac makers. 

It all began in 1863 when Jean Baptiste Camus started Camus-Le Grande Marque with a few partners. It wasn’t long before the brand caught attention overseas with the help of Jean Baptiste’s sons, Edmond and Gaston. In 1910, Camus was named an official purveyor to the Court of Nicolas II, the last tsar of Russia. From then on, all efforts to expand its sales internationally proved to be very successful due to the dedication of the next Camus generations: Michel, Jean-Paul, and Cyril.  Today, Camus has business presence in several countries including the United States, Vietnam, Russia, China, and Hong Kong. In addition, Camus Wines & Spirits has also partnered with Duty Free, making their product available in several airports worldwide.

The house of Camus has always been based in the Cognac area of France which has been named an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) region since 1916, consisting of six crus: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fin Bois, Bons Bois, and Bois à Terroirs.  From this entire area, Camus harvests Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard grapes to make fine cognac. 

Camus cognac comes in several blends. There are the VS Elegance, VSOP Elegance, XO Elegance, and Extra Elegance. There is also the Family Legacy, which is made with the five different crus, with the Borderies added last for a unique finish. The result is a rich cognac with tasting notes reminiscent of crème brûlée. 

Camus also makes cognac with grapes from the Ile De Ré vineyards with the Ile De Ré Fine Island, Ile De Ré Double Matured, and Ile De Ré Cliffside Cellar. Meanwhile, there is also the Camus Borderies XO produced in very limited quantities. Then, there’s the Camus Rarissimes vintage range with notable vintages such as 1969, 1973, 1975, and 1991. 

In honor of Camus’ 150 years of cognac excellence, Camus recently held an event at the Manila Peninsula to introduce the Camus Cuvée 5.150 that is presented in a Baccarat crystal decanter. Each bottle is special for it carries inside a cognac made to pay tribute of five generations of Camus men who have been instrumental in making the brand a worldwide success. It is a rich blend of Bon Bois, Fins Bois, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Grand Champagne cognacs. The result is a cognac with a subtle hint of vanilla on the nose, which continues onto the palate along with a rich blend of tropical fruits and a hint of sweet almond. And with this, Camus presents its richest and most treasured bottle yet to the rest of the world.
