JLo big winner at MTV Awards

On My Way (Marry Me), the inspiring piece written by Jennifer Lopez, was named Best Song at the recent MTV Movie and TV Awards. Used in the motion picture Marry Me, it is about finding love again after a heartbreak. In the case of this story, it was so massive because it was seen by millions live during a concert and also all over the world on social media.

JLo plays a popular pop star, whose wedding was to be held in an arena crowded with her fans and with full social media coverage. You know, YouTube, Facebook, etc. where it was supposed to break records in the number of views. Unfortunately, her fiancé, played by the Latino singing star Maluma, chickened out at the last minute and she was left on stage, jilted and in tears, clad in a beautiful wedding gown.

But fate works in strange ways, fans sympathetic to her flight pushed somebody from the audience up on stage to be her utterly surprised groom. He was a high school math teacher, played by Owen Wilson, who was totally innocent of social media. The union seemed doomed from the start. They were so different but in true rom-com fashion, they discovered true love and hopefully lived happily ever after.

I love how JLo expressed finding true love after a heartbreak in the song. “Every heartbreak was a yellow brick road pointing me straight, just taking me home to you.” Wouldn’t that all heartbreaks should end this way?

Nice heartwarming movie that brought romance back to the big screen again. Great song, too. I am so glad that the MTV win made me listen to it again. Who knows, On My Way (Marry Me) might just become JLo’s first-ever Best Original Song Academy Award nomination.

Incidentally, MTV also picked JLo to be the recipient of the event’s all-important Generation Award. The hardworking star of recordings, concerts, television, the big screen and I am sure, also social media, thanked “disappointment and failure for teaching her to be strong” and those people who said she could never do it, both in front of her and behind her back. She was profused with thanks too to all her fans and then gave a shoutout to her family, most especially her twins and her real-life fiancé Ben Affleck.

Hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and held last June 5, the MTV Movie and TV Awards is the event that the hip set among movie and TV fans look forward to every summer. It is not your usual movie or TV award-giving shows. Artistic excellence is also considered but the choices are the favorites of the young audiences. I am sure that they heartily agree with this year’s winners.
