MTRCB to implement new 'SPG' rating
MANILA, Philippines - The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) will start implementing the new “SPG” rating for television programs starting Feb. 9, pursuant to Memorandum Circular No. 12-2011.
The Board will soon come out with an infomercial to raise public awareness on the revised rating system for television. The infomercial will feature Carmina Villarroel and Zoren Legaspi and their children Peter and Maria Cassandra. The infomercial empowers parents to exercise caution and vigilance over the viewing habits of their children.
In the implementation of the revised rating system for television that will now include the new “SPG” rating, the Board will give due consideration to the need to balance the interest of the State to protect and promote the development and welfare of the youth with the interest of the broadcast industry to freedom of expression.
Programs classified “SPG” may contain more serious topic and theme, which may not be advisable for children to watch except under the very vigilant guidance and presence of a parent or adult.
The Board has conducted several dialogues with representatives of various television networks and other stakeholders in connection with the revised rating system for television. It is also trying to formalize the support of various television networks to the new rating system of the Board through a Memorandum of Agreement.
A press conference will be held on Feb. 9, 2 p.m. at the MTRCB Board Room, Fourth Floor, MTRCB Building. #18, Timog Ave., Quezon City. For details, call Tootie Lorenzo at 376-7380/83 loc. 104.
