Will Matt Monro Jr. find his lady love in Boracay?

FUNFARE - Ricky Lo -

Flushed with the success of his opening concert at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City last Dec. 7 and his second show at the Cebu Parklane International Hotel yesterday, Matt Monro Jr. is flying to Boracay to keep his date with his fans in the island resort on the third leg of his ongoing Philippine tour to be held at OneMGM Resort Village on Dec. 15.

With his good track record in his brief but flourishing musical career (not to mention the glorious legacy bequeathed by his celebrated father and namesake, Matt Monro), there is no doubt his coming one-night gig in the popular resort will turn out to be another hit.

Touted as the first musical event in Boracay featuring a foreign artist, the show has generated a great deal of interest and excitement not only among Boracay residents but among tourists and holiday-makers who flock to the island known for its pristine beauty and idyllic grandeur.

In view of this, the host resort, OneMGM (formerly Paradise Garden, now under the new management of GHPIResort, Inc.), has pulled all stops to ensure the success of the musical presentation that will kick off a range of exciting and spectacular holiday events and activities it has lined up for its guests and patrons.

Aside from setting a musical milestone, the Boracay concert of Matt Monro Jr. has gained added significance considering his admission during his initial visit to the country last year that he was open to marrying a Filipina.

It has sparked the intriguing question: Will he meet the girl of his dreams in Boracay?

It will be recalled that Matt Jr. astonished the public with his revelation during a news conference on the sidelines of his debut concert here that his father advised him “to marry a Filipina” when the time comes for him to settle down.

“A Filipina woman is loving and understanding,” was how the senior Matt Monro extolled Filipinas in making the recommendation about them to his son, who was one year old when his father came to the Philippines for the first in a series of hit concert tours.

Until the day he left after his concert series, however, nothing more has been heard about Matt Jr.’s discreet search for a life partner from among Pinay women. It remained a mystery on whether he succeeded in finding the girl of his dreams during his brief stay here.

Our DPA from Steve O’Neal Productions, the promoter of Matt Jr.’s ongoing series of Christmas shows, tipped us off that the British singing sensation went home last year empty-handed and without finding the right girl for him, although he vowed not to give up his search.

Because of this, his current tour has revived public interest on the subject and spawned a guessing game among celebrity watchers. Will Matt Jr. be more blessed in his quest this time around considering that he will be staying here for a longer period?

According to his tour schedule, his shows will take him to some of the more exciting and wonderful destinations across the archipelago — from Antipolo City in Mega Manila to Cebu City to Boracay to Iloilo City in the Visayas and back to Pampanga and Manila in Luzon.

Of particular interest to Matt Jr.’s fans, however, is his stint in Boracay, where he will stay for an extended period of time after his Dec. 15 performance before proceeding to the remaining legs of his tour.

Will a few days of rest and relaxation afford him the opportunity to meet and get to know the right girl from among the bevy of local beauties he will encounter in the island as he lolls along its sandy beaches and marvels at its powdery, white sand and undulating surf?

Who knows? With its lush, pristine surroundings, OneMGM could provide the perfect setting and right ambiance for a lovely and romantic interlude with the right girl who has proven elusive during his last visit here. Will the British star, a most eligible bachelor, experience his greatest moments amidst the beauty and splendor of the idyllic haven that is Boracay?

Just as he succeeded in conquering local fans with his inspired rendition of his father’s memorable hits in his own version and style, can he duplicate his feat by finding and winning the heart of the Filipino woman who, in his dad’s words, “is loving and understanding”?

Well, we wish him the best of luck.

Meanwhile, Boracay guests and patrons of OneMGM and the rest of Boracay can look forward to one memorable evening of music, warmth and love on Dec. 15 when Matt Jr. performs the classic hits of his father, such as Born Free,  From Russia With Love, Softly As I Leave You, Walk Away, Yesterday and Portrait Of My Love.

Faith Cuneta will be the special guest.

Among the sponsors of the show are Seair, BusinessMirror, Muse and Radio Boracay.

(Package cost of the show and cocktails is P850; room only: P2,499 (half-twin with breakfast). For reservations, call (Manila) 634-3581 to 83; (Boracay) 036-288-3411/506-3111.)
