PPP Center to support LGUs’ climate projects

Louise Maureen Simeon - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Center has reaffirmed its support to local government units (LGUs) in developing and implementing climate-related projects following the turnover of the resilience roadmaps and Investment Portfolios for Risk Resilience (IPRRs) of 16 climate-vulnerable areas in the country.

In a statement, PPP Center executive director Cynthia Hernandez emphasized the agency’s support in identifying potential projects in IPRRs by providing technical and advisory support in project development and implementation.

Last Dec.19, the PPP Center and Climate Change Service of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) received the resilience roadmaps and IPRRs of 16 identified climate-vulnerable areas such as Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Siquijor, Cotabato Province, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, Catanduanes, Ifugao, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Metro Cebu, Metro Iloilo, Metro Davao and Metro Manila.

The resilience roadmaps and IPRRs were developed under the Risk Resiliency Program, which aims to enhance climate and disaster-resiliency in targeted areas and include climate change and disaster risk reduction in the development process of LGUs.

The Risk Resiliency Program being implemented by the DENR and the PPP Center, is supported by the Urban Climate Change Resiliency Trust Fund and the Asian Development Bank.

For the development of the roadmaps, an assessment was undertaken on the relevant climate and disaster risks in the 16 identified areas.

The roadmaps cover climate-resilient investments across all national government agencies, including the DENR, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Agriculture, Department of Interior and Local Government, among others.

As for the IPRRs, these consist of potential PPP projects in emerging climate change and resilient sectors including water supply and sanitation, solid waste management, renewable energy, health, drainage and flood control, and green vertical infrastructure.
