ACEN starts commercial operations of Vietnam wind farm

MANILA, Philippines — ACEN, the listed energy platform of the Ayala Group, has started commercially operating its 252-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Vietnam.

A joint project with AMI Renewables, the wind project in Quang Binh province is one of the largest wind farms in Vietnam. It is one of the four wind projects being developed by ACEN in Vietnam.

The Quang Binh wind farm is expected to produce 648 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year, enough to power 270,000 homes and help avoid 580,000 tons of CO2 annually. Its wind turbines stand at 145 meters in hub height, which allows the optimization of wind energy production.

“The 252-MW Quang Binh wind farm plays a critical role in helping Vietnam achieve its renewable energy target, and is a testament to our ability to execute large scale developments amidst challenging times,” ACEN International group head Patrice Clausse said.

“ACEN’s renewables growth continues to accelerate and we are delighted to be part of Vietnam’s rapid development toward a more sustainable future,” he said.

The Quang Binh wind farm is the third joint project of ACEN and AMI Renewables.

“We are fortunate to have strong support from the people and government of Quang Binh province, and to have completed the project on time. The project marks another important step toward AMI AC Renewables’ 1,000 MW renewables capacity target by 2025,” AMI AC Renewables board director and CEO Nguyen Nam Thang said.

“To be part of Vietnam’s energy transition to a net zero future has been a privilege, as well as a challenge, but we – AMI AC Renewables – are keen to follow to reach the goal,” he said.

The other projects under the partnership are the 50-MW Khanh Hoa and 30-MW Dak Lak solar farms, which started operations in 2019 and have since been contributing to Vietnam’s clean energy supply.

The joint venture company also recently announced its plan for a pilot battery energy storage system in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam.

Vietnam is ACEN’s second largest market next to the Philippines, with 1,000 MW renewable projects in operation and under construction.

In total, the company has 2,600 MW of attributable capacity in the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and Australia. The company’s renewable share of capacity is at 80 percent, one of the highest in the region.

The firm aspires to be the largest listed renewables platform in Southeast Asia with its 2025 goal.
