The book that taught Alfred Vargas how to be a real man

THE READING CLUB - Girlie Rodis - The Philippine Star

Alfred Vargas is one of the most talented and accomplished actors of his generation and has appeared in a consistent string of hit mainstream movies and top-rated TV series. Alfred took a brief hiatus from the entertainment industry when he was elected in 2013 as Congressman of the fifth district of Quezon City.

Recently, Alfred took another step forward in his career as he signed on as one of the newest endorsers of House of Obagi (HOO) for its The HOO Factor campaign.

Founded on a renowned skin care brand worldwide, HOO (the exclusive distributor of Obagi medical products in the country) is now the destination place for skin health restoration and transformation for any woman to achieve beautiful and younger-looking skin at any age. The HOO 360 series, a set of holistic treatment programs that combines the latest medical skin treatments and tried and trusted prescription-strength skin care products, designed and administered only by board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons

I asked the Congressman to share some of his favorite books:

1. The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera.

“This book taught me that being a real man is about self-control and being responsible for your actions. Love and loyalty always come together and should never be apart.”

2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo.

“This book taught me to dream big and believe it will come true. This is one of the most influential books in my life.”

3. The Beach by Alex Garland.

“I learned that paradise is not a singular place that we look for. It’s what difference we make of our everyday lives that makes this world a real paradise.”

4. The Road Less Travelled by Scott Peck.

“This book taught me that all things of value come with a price... hard work, preparation and commitment.”

5. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

“I read this when I was a teenager and somehow I was able to relate that time with Holden’s confusion, love, hate, anger, and compassion during that time in my life. We really can’t ‘catch’ and save someone else if we have not saved ourselves first.”
