Cops seize bomb in raid; suspected bomber eludes arrest

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police recovered an improvised bomb and bomb-making materials during a raid at a suspected bomber's safehouse in this city over the weekend, an official said Monday.

City police chief Senior Superintendent Angelito Casimiro said the police and military forces raided the safehouse of Yahsin Bayoyong at Barangay Muti last Saturday. The suspect, who is also wanted for a murder charge, was not at the safehouse during the raid.

Casimiro said operatives instead arrested Bayoyong's father, Ebol, for possession of the improvised bomb. The bomb was mae from a liter of plastic bottle loaded with ammonium nitrate with a blasting cap.

Casimiro said the raiding forces also recovered 12 assembled blasting caps and 13 kilos of ammonium nitrate from the house.

The police official said the raid is part of the intensified security operation of the police and the military in the region due to information of a possible attack by members of the Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).
