How to spin your own web: Optimum online presence 101
MANILA, Philippines - For a generation that’s been reared on the World Wide Web, the line between the Internet and real life is almost nonexistent, and this is especially true for determining the dictators of cool. Television, no longer the only launching pad for faces to look out for, takes the backseat in an age where everyone harbors a desire to be heard. So accessible is the Internet that it’s become easy target for those who feel a compulsion for connectivity — a condition so genuine in existence it could be a clinical disorder, and so universal that admitting ignorance to anything is hardly acceptable — to share their thoughts and photos in the hopes of turning into the next big thing, at least online. It’s also proof that net-oriety has begun translating into real-world fame. But in the sea of fashion, food, and music bloggers, how can you tell whose blogs are worth a second look, and whose Twitter is worth that Follow?
Only on the Internet is it possible for anybody to become a “somebody” in an instant. Some may revel in that, while others continue to choose anonymity, but for those of you who fall in the former category, this is for you: Young Star talks to Ramon Bautista and Saab Magalona, two celebrities who aren’t about to give up their 15 minutes of Internet fame, but are willing to share a few of their “secrets.”
What do you think constitutes Internet fame?
SAAB: When your thoughts influence and inspire others.
Ramon: Having good looks is a major factor as well. It’s about being a responsible role model to the youth.
What are the “secrets” to getting yourself noticed — to becoming a prolific Tweeter or becoming a viral sensation?
SAAB: Keeping things interesting and original works for me.
Ramon: Making it appear that you are living an amazing life, or at least that your days seem more interesting than the average person’s life.
How can one stand out and be more interesting?
Saab: Same as offline — do your own thing, and stop trying to be someone else.
Ramon: If something worthwhile happens, take a picture of it or just brag about it on Twitter. Make them feel that events that happen to you never happen in other people’s ordinary and boring lives.
Who do you follow on the Internet?
Saab: Celebrities online — Rainn Wilson and Conan O’Brien are always funny. Online celebrities — KevJumba and Chuvaness.
Ramon: Lord Voldemort, Justin Beiber, Conan O’Brien and Sora Aoi.
Are there any disadvantages to being famous online?
Saab: The haters are usually anonymous cowards so they can be pretty brutal.
Ramon: It’s hard to convince Internet-illiterate uncles and aunts what an Internet action star is.
