Breakfast the most important meal of the day

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. When waking up I get excited to open the fridge and start my day off right. The word “breakfast” itself sums up why it’s the most important meal. It’s the break from the longest fast of your day. Meaning if you are getting your eight hours of sleep, your body hasn’t replenished its fuel stores for over eight hours. So first thing in the morning, your body needs food to get the energy that will get you through the day.

Breakfast gets your metabolism going and also stabilizes your blood sugar levels that regulate appetite and energy. Without breakfast, you will have lower energy levels due to a slower metabolism and will most likely over eat in your future meals due to the imbalance in sugar levels. It’s been shown in studies that skipping breakfast as a diet technique is more counter-productive because your metabolism will be down and your blood sugar levels will be out of wack, causing you to burn less calories and overeat with bad foods later on in the day.

I also believe and have been told by my nutritionists that when you eat in the morning, you have the whole day to burn those calories. So if you are going to cheat a little, do it in the morning. Meaning if you want a little extra bacon or sugars in the morning, go ahead, it’s much better than doing it at night. Make sure your breakfast is balanced, having some protein, complex carbs, fruit, and some good fats (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and omega-3s). Enjoy your breakfast and get the boost you need to have a great and productive day.

My breakfast today: 

Protein: 2 eggs sunny side up

Complex carbs: whole-wheat bagel with cream cheese

Fruit: bowl of chopped-up bits of papaya, apple, melon, mango.

Favorite smoothie: 1 apple, 1 banana, 1tablespoon peanut butter, 1 tablespoon Nutella and milk
