Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra opens 30th concert season

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) opens its 30th concert season 2012-2013 with “Orchestral Fireworks” on Sept. 21 at the Philamlife Auditorium.

Under the baton of musical director Olivier Ochanine, the PPO will perform Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra, Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.

On Oct. 19, the PPO features Bottesini’s Concert No. 2 in with double bass soloist Kurt Muroki in “The Mysterious Mountain.” The program also includes Prokofieff’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite and Hohvaness’ Mysterious Mountain Symphony.

On Nov. 16, Japanese conductor Yoshikazu Fukumura leads the PPO in performing Delius’ Irmelin Prelude, Kodaly’s Dances of Galanta, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. 

PPO ends the year with “De Leon and Arutunian” on Dec. 14 with two soloists — Raymond de Leon on trumpet and Iñaki Etxepare on cello — with Herminigildo Ranera conducting. They will perform Bedrick Smetana’s Moldau (Vltava), Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto, and Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite.

Ochanine conducts the PPO as it ushers in the New Year on Jan. 25, 2013 with Ryan Cayabyab’s New Work for Violin and Orchestra featuring PPO associate concertmaster Dino Decena. The program also includes Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 “Spring.”

Korean soprano Hyunah Yu and Filipino tenor Arthur Espiritu join the PPO on Feb. 22 in “Shakespearean Delights.” Repertoire includes Nicolai’s Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, various works for soprano and tenor, and orchestra based on Shakespeare, Mendelssohn’s suite to A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream and Walton’s suite from Henry V.

Billed as “The Maestro’s Maestro,” conductor Mark Gibson leads the PPO in Georges Bizet’s Jeux d’Enfants, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe and Camille Saint Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 on Mar. 22 with Gao Can on violin.

The PPO concert season ends on Apr. 19 with “Mahler’s Fifth” featuring the winner of the PPO Piano Concerto Competition and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.5.

Except for Sept. 21, all PPO season concerts will be staged at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) at 8 p.m.

Ticket prices are at P1,000, P800, P500, P350 and P200, with discounts available to students, senior citizens and groups. Subscription packages are also available for eight or four shows.
