Reinterpretations by Filipino artists at Salcedo Auctions' 'Ilustrado Home + Modern Decorator'

MANILA, Philippines - Salcedo Auctions announces its next auction dedicated to antiques, fine art, and interiors on Sept. 25, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Nash Room, Mandarin Oriental, Manila.

Consisting of Philippine and continental furniture, décor, and objects of vertu from the turn of the 20th century to the present, this sale also features paintings from the estate of Benjamin and Elena Lagdameo, inherited from Don Salvador Lagdameo, Treasurer of the Philippines from 1927 to 1936:

“Portrait of a Student,” an important 1937 watercolor done in Rome by National Artist Victorio C. Edades, a friend of the family through Elvira Lagdameo Royeca, who was also an artist; Street

“Scene with Sampaloc Tree,” a classic 1934 oil on narra panel by Fabian de la Rosa; and Rubber Plantation Scene, a rare oil-on-wood by Pablo Amorsolo dated 1928.

Other pieces typifying the ilustrado home include a bone-inlaid balayong settee; a solid molave San Roque santo from Bohol; a mesa altar in narra and molave with lappet details; a watercolor by Félix Resurrección Hidalgo; a pair of outstanding oval-shaped colonial icons on wood; Renaissance revival tall pieces; Baccarat, Lalique, and Waterford crystal; Limoges porcelain pieces; and fine bone china by Aynsley, Royal Crown Derby, and Wedgwood.

With an eye for compelling design, modern and contemporary pieces enhance the living space of the discerning collector. Highlights include an award-winning Patricia Urquiola “Antibodi” chaise lounge for Moroso; Florence Knoll and Selig lounge chairs; a Thonet side chair in mint condition; and three Arne Jacobsen “Ant” chairs especially reinterpreted by leading contemporary Filipino visual artists Patricia Eustaquio, Nikki Luna and Ronald Ventura. These are matched by large-scale inkwash paintings by Onib Olmedo; an exceptional pen and ink study of Vicente Manansala’s “Pila sa Bigas”; an uncommon BenCab print; and an iconic oil on canvas by Ang Kiukok.

Preview is ongoing at Salcedo Auctions, ground floor, Three Salcedo Place, 121 Tordesillas St., Salcedo Village, Makati City until Friday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Prospective bidders are expected to attend the preview as the lots will not be exhibited at the auction.
