Teachers seek P1,000 internet allowance
MANILA, Philippines — Teachers should be provided with internet or communication allowance to cover expenses related to the shift to distance learning in the upcoming school year, an organization said.
The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) recommended providing teachers with P1,000 monthly allowance for communication-related expenses such as internet connectivity and mobile load.
“With online tasks continuously growing, we may need more funds to cope,” Ildefonso Enguerra III, president of the TDC Metro Manila Teachers’ Union, said.
The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier said that teachers may use their annual P3,500 cash allowance to cover their expenses related to the ongoing remote enrollment, which requires them to communicate with students in their previous advisory class.
The agency on Tuesday released the guidelines for the cash allowance, which teachers can use to purchase “tangible or intangible” teaching supplies and materials.
Previously known as chalk allowance, the one-time benefit is considered an outright expense, meaning teachers will not be required to present receipts for liquidation.
Education Undersecretary for finance Annalyn Sevilla said the allowance would be released this month. Helen Flores, Paolo Romero, Rhodina Villanueva
