‘Maymay’ weakens slightly as it leaves PAR
MANILA, Philippines— Typhoon "Maymay" (international name: Jebi) exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Monday.
Maymay’s eye was last located 1,340 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes (outside PAR) as of 4 a.m.
The state weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon also slightly weakened. It has sustained winds of 180 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.
In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA reiterated that the typhoon no longer has a direct effect on any part of the country. However, the southwest monsoon or habagat it enhances is expected to bring scattered light to moderate and heavy rains over various parts of the country.
Among the areas expected to experience monsoon rains are Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol region and Zamboanga Peninsula.
“Residents in these areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and to continue monitoring for updates,” PAGASA said in its advisory.
Maymay is forecasted to move north northwest at 20 kph. Weather specialist Gener Quitlong earlier said it will head towards Japan on Tuesday. —Rosette Adel
