Robin Padilla pondering retirement abroad if 'gov't system doesn't change'
MANILA, Philippines — Actor-politician Robin Padilla is reconsidering past plans to retire in order focus on his wife Mariel Rodriguez and their children.
The sitting senator was a guest on the April 24 episode of Bilyonaryo New Channel's "Politiko Talks" where toward the end of the episode host Marichu Villanueva brought up the news that Robin was selling his family's Museo de Padilla in Quezon City.
The former home of the Padilla family now serves as an events venue and is notable for its traditional Filipino architecture with Spanish motifs, with interior features including a music room, a meeting hall, a conference hall and three ballrooms.
"2010 pa nung naging lovey-dovey kami ni Mariel, gusto ko nang mag-retire, magpunta sa abroad," said Robin, sharing the couple had visited the Netherlands and Germany.
Looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Robin made it clear that if the Philippines is unable to change its current system of government, which he has no faith in, he'd rather spend his time with family.
"I'm sorry, patawarin niyo ako, hindi ko nakikita ang future [sa] sistemang ito," the actor-senator added.
Robin said, upon being asked by co-host Atty. Jesus Falcis, that he had initially wanted to retire in Brunei and even did an ocular there with Mariel, however the latter found the Southeast Asian neighbor too hot.
Another option the couple had visited was Iceland but it would be too expensive, which is why Robin thought about putting up the Museo de Padilla for sale.
Falcis also suggested Thailand but Robin shut that down, quipping that Mariel might strangle him if they moved there.
Villanueva admitted her speculation that Robin was selling Museo de Padilla to raise funds ahead of the 2028 elections, but Robin said he had no need for fundraisers and claimed he topped the 2022 senate race without any expenses.
Robin did express gladness that many were bidding on the sale, though he added wanting the purchase to be done with dollars.
"Wala akong tiwala sa pesos, mamaya kung saan pa galing 'yan... Okay lang basta huwag galing sa flood control [projects]," Robin quipped to end. — with reports from Jan Milo Severo, video from Bilyonaryo News Channel's YouTube channel
